Christ, that Maiko scene was terrible. And I like Maiko. Honestly, what were the writers smoking when they decided, "You're so beautiful when you hate everything," was a good line? I'm really surprised at how bad that was, considering that the Maiko scene from The Awakening was so good. wow, that;s probably the modt I've ever agreed with you. but still, the worst was "I don't ahte you." and "I don't hate you too" WRITERSareONPOT

I'm really surprised at how bad that was, considering that the Maiko scene from The Awakening was so good. I agree that this wasn't a very well scripted dialogue. If I were to go on a "Things Avatar Characters Would Never Say" thread, I'd probably have written something along the lines of: Zuko: You're so beautiful when you hate the world. Also, the whole, "I don't hate you, too," was just...wrong. I have a hard time seeing Mai outright confessing her love (never read the comic, so correct me if I'm mistaken), but really can't see Zuko responding in that way. I thought he was a little more emotionally well-rounded than Mai. Don't get me wrong, I really like Mai, as I've said in the past, but this scene just didn't hit me like it had the potential to do.

i'm pretty sure the writers wanted us to hate that scene. there's something very fishy about maiko.
we didn't see much of zuko's palace life in this epi EXCEPT for the "i don't hate you too!' scene and then right after that zuko tells his uncle that he isn't happy with his life.
*coughs*
something is definitely not right with maiko....

I'm starting to wonder if Mai and Zuko already had something going on before he was banished three years ago. Cause the jump right into their relationship in the first and second episode is kind of strange.

This episode was so bipolar.... did anyone notice? It was so unbalanced! The Gaang's plot was so lighthearted, and Zuko's plot just...emoemoemoemo...... And the Maiko scene. I don't care if Zuko is a dork and if they are unromantic romantics, the scripting was just AWKWARD. I mean any scene that has Azula saying the words "fatso" and "dumb-dumb" to follow up........ That's what I was trying to say. And like I said before, for me it wasn't so much the dialogue as it was that laugh. It was weird.

Cause the jump right into their relationship in the first and second episode is kind of strange. I think they did...but it still doesn't stop me from hating the dialog It's explained in the second Avatar issue of Nick mag in one of three comics. Azula sets up Zuko and Mai on a date in hopes that their mutual childhood crushes will make them fall in love and Zuko will return home since he was having doubts. Zuko and Mai don't like Ty Lee and Azula's giggling in the bushes (dirty yuri thoughts) so they go off on a walk where they meet Jin. Jin wants to know who Mai is, Zuko says she's the knife thrower at his former circus so Jin gets Mai to show off. Mai skewers a fish with an icicle on Zuko's head then Jin tries, nearly killing Zuko and knocking him into a fountain; Mai laughs and Zuko chases. They reminisce in a romantic alley, and kiss... the next day they're lovey dovey but Zuko still isn't sure about returning home, upon seeing a chained Iroh and hearing from Azula that he may not survive the trip home, Zuko agrees to return the FN. Gee, it was lucky they had a MUTUAL childhood crush which apparently was actually true love... well that worked out nicely; no need to actually develop a relationship.

geez...what did you expect the dialog would be...I really want to know cause it seem normal of what Zuko would be...note he not the romatic type and so no swooning or see puppy love eyes. It not who he is. So were trying to come up with reason with limited infomation to justify which in also be said about the relationship cause casual fan not to get it cause it just seem added.

Good episode, although not without problems.
One thing that struck me is that at the beginning of the seasons, the episodes are a lot more light-hearted and then progressively become more serious as we get to the season finale. The Awakening was a partial exception because Aang almost died, Zuko betrayed Iroh, etc but now we're back on track.
The humorous/fun parts of this episode were really great. Sokka in the beard, Aang being a normal kid in school, and then the dance scene were awesome! The music was so well done, I can't wait until they decide to make an overpriced soundtrack to sell us because I will definitely buy it!!
The only minor problem I had with this episode was the juxtapositioning of the serious with the fun, i.e. Zuko and Iroh in prison and the fun and games elsewhere in the Fire Nation. To me, the contrast did not work too well because you were laughing and smiling thinking about the dance/joke you just saw and then they cut to Iroh crying and Zuko yelling. The transition was too sudden.
Lastly, I want to reiterate my position that Zuko is really stupid. Really, really, really stupid. First he allows Azula to give him credit for slaying the Avatar knowing that she must have some evil motive, then he marches into the jail to visit Iroh. Then, on top of that, he wants advice from Iroh!
"Uncle, I've shown myself to be a total fool with no clue as to what the right thing to do is. I betrayed you and I let you down. Can I have some advice? Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with a cherry on top? No? Well you're a big fat jerk uncle!!" - That was how it went down in the cell. If I was Iroh, I would have whispered for him to come really close the bars, and as he leaned in to hear my whispered words of wisdom, I would have clocked him and yelled at him for being so dang foolish. But Iroh is too broken and wise for that. Zuko really had his hopes up at the end of season 2 that he was changing for the better - I mean he was happy to make, drink, and serve tea! That led Iroh to believe that Zuko was making the right choice when in reality he still longed for his father's love and approval and would do anything to get it.

I think it's all the so faerie taleish. There's such a low chance that you actually love a person from your childhood that Zuko and Mai's relationship seems like they are just playing around! It is VERY sudden that they are in love again...relationship's that big take longer than 5 weeks since that is how long Aang was out.

The problem with the Headband is that everything happened with no explanation. We don't know what the gaang are going to do while waiting for the eclipse, one would assume they would do the logical thing and find Aang a Firebending teacher so he can learn to Firebend... but no, they suddenly wander into an FN town so they can... eat meat which they could have hunted for. The next episode is also filler-ish, it certainly doesn't look important to the plot despite it looking fairly interesting. So we may have to sit through a bunch of fillers until the eclipse.

You're right; the whole episode just seemed like silly filler. Sokka pretty much hit the nail on the head when he said, "I can't believe we're having a secret dance party. I just seems so... silly." I hope that not too many more episodes are filler like this, although I can't pretend that I didn't thoroughly enjoy Sokka's beard.
