Gutu Patik did say that metal is just earth that has been purified. In other words, the configuration of metal is slightly different than the configuration of the rock or dirt that earthbenders typically deal with. My perception of metalbending was not so much that Toph was bending bits of earth that had not been completely purified from metal. Rather, she perceived the structure of metal and saw that it was earth in a slightly different arrangement that she was used to and learned how to flow with it.

I think all earthbenders can bend metal, but are just not powerful enough. Just like any firebender can bend lightening but if they cannot separarte their yin and yang, they cannot do it. I agree, I think Toph can do it because she probably is the strongest earthbender of all

Aang has bent earth when he wasn't in contact with it. The zoo he made in Tales of Ba Sing Se, he made the walls while on the air scooter. So the not in contact with earth theory isn't really viable.

Maybe only a select group on earthbenders can metal bend. I agree maybe it's like the sharingan or the byakigan in naruto maybe it's passed down in families or maybe because toph's technique in earth-bending is different and "see's" and earth-bends with earth bending she has the ability to "see" the metal while other normal earth benders can't see it!

it like fine wine when you talk about metal or lighting bending...it take whole a lot of concentration and skill to refine there bending ability...that what make it so special since not everyone can do it.
Like I said…it a good episode that is heavy on Katara and for a good reason in later during the chapters

Because they were panicked and scared. People are like sheep when they panic, not knowing what to do, not doing what they should. They could have manipulated the earth beneath the ocean but panic takes control of the mind.

Well I think the Earthbenders would have to have some sorta idea of where earth on the ocean floor was before they could bend it, otherwise they could hypothetical earthbend rocks miles away.

And they were shut in by the metal ships...since Toph is the only one that can metalbend, the others would naturally feel stifled until they noticed the coal.

I agree with the idea that they were all too broken. They had already lost on land to have been taken to the rig in the first place, so what do they think they can do when they're miles away from any solid earth? Plus, the ocean floor is rather sandy for the most part, and earthbenders seem to have trouble bending sand for some reason.

and not all of those earthbenders are that strong. katara was nervous about bending water she couldnt see ("Jet") so maybe they weree nervous too.

Heres a pic of the average ocean depths off the coast. If they were anywhere off the continental shelf then the the floor would be miles below them.
