Not attempting to kill everyone's hopes and wishes but it was confirmed a while back that Mike and Bryan only planned on 3 seasons. And not on Wiki, but on animationinsider--a group that has had direct contact with the Mike and Bryan themselves.
The reason books have the titles that they do (Water, Air, Fire) is because those books primarily focus on the Aang's MASTERING of said elements (in Water book, Katara's mastering really). The reason there can't possibly be an Air book is because...well... Aang's already mastered air.
I said it in another thread, and someone already mentioned it here, but if there is an Air book, slim chance as that is, then most likely it will be about Aang's past and his mastering airbending and the story will be in somewhat of an OVA form.
In the unfortunate event that Nick gets greedy and starts slave-driving the creators to go beyond the third season, I'll bet my last two pennies that the series will seriously depreciate in quality. (Look at what happened to Dexter's Lab -_-) Series that tend to drag on for long periods of time with no real ending in sight usually burn out and lose the people's interest. Because of which, I'm glad that there will only be 3 seasons.

There could still be a 4th book though. And it could still be named "Air". After the war the Avatar world, especially the firenation will need some serious reconstruction. If Aang survives season three, it might be intresting to see some of the problems the encounter trying to rebuild a stable, peaceful world. Or the creators could come up with another story line...provided the script, plots, and character delevopment is solid.

If it one thing I learn is that people change and so I believe it when it get to that point. I really think it possible that Avatar could last longer then three episodes. I think the fear of a cartoons going stale isn't really anything to be afraid of cause it a cycle that scene from time to time even in this modern stage...kind of like most show in Nick like Spongebob, where it hidden at first, then get popular by a crowd and now try to survive. Sad but most cartoons are treated like fads.

Actually, the creators said they were thinking of doing a fourth season (but only a fourth, I think), which is why people are so excited right now. They hadn't planned originally on doing it though, which is why we aren't sure there's going to be a fourth season. Most likely there won't be, but they did mention thinking about it.

If the 4th season was calld air it could be about aang trying to bring back the Air nomads from extinction. So there won't just be 3 elements anymore.

^Well, then that defeats the purpose of the show being about the last airbender. Who knows? Maybe a fourth season would be nice. But as much work as they put into the show, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if, by the end of the whole shebang, Mike and Bryan were tired and called it quits, or even worse, sold the rights to other people who are less competent.
I'm sure the two are having fun with the series and enjoy the successes of it, but I've read so many times from interviews of so many creators of popular shows that when they went beyond what they expected as the end, producing their work became less enjoyable.
If there's one thing I definitely do not want, it's the creators feeling obligated to go past what their original goals to belt out stories just to appease Nick.

I'd honestly would rather the creators try to secure a difference source of funding other than Nick then create a 4th season. Of course with the caveat that the new backer would allow them more creative freedom. I would imagine that making an action oriented show with kids (7+) in mind while dealing with war and death to be rather hard.

We should create a (Save the Avatar foundation) and give all the money to Mike and Bryan! And hopefully they could keep making avatar and not let the quality drop. But unfortunately making shows is expensive and we would probably get like $100...
