Can non-firebenders redirect lightning? After all, it's all about letting the lightning pass through one's internal chi flow and out of the body. And since everyone has chi flowing in their body, anyone should be able to redirect lightning as long as they have good control over their chi flow right?
Unless only firebenders could handle the intense heat generated by the lightning, in which case I guess only firebenders can do it. But in that case certain waterbenders should still be able to do it as long as they can keep their internal body temperature cool enough.
So what are your thoughts on this?

I believe only Firebenders can do this, since it's a form of firebending. Iroh did call it a firebending move, if I remember correctly.
Anyways, I think that redirection is a form of transferring heat energy (fire) to chi energy to let it pass through us, and only firebenders have that sort of control.
But I've been wrong before.

I don't think so. Even through it's just redirecting I think it would still take some firebending skills to control it.

A firebender uses his/her firebending to manipulate lightning through his/her chi flows.

In order to reditect lihtening, you must redirect to the stomach, and store it there for a second before redirecting it back out again.
in other words, you must store lightening in the fire chakra (located in the stomach)
i dont think a non-firebender would have a strong enough fire chakra to store all of that energy.
good question though.

After much reading and contemplating, I'm starting to lean towards non-benders being unable to redirect lightning, because I'm a non-bender and I can't redirect lightning...

I'm gonna have to say they can't. That it is firebender exclusive. Firebenders turn their chi into bendable energy. And they can bend and redirect the energy of lightning. Not water benders or anyone else, it's kind of like what we saw in firelord and avatar, when sozin took the heat out of the lava. he was taking the energy and redirecting it. if i recall, the movement even looked similar to what iroh taught zuko.

I think they can. The chi is in eveyone, and if they focus enough, they SHOULD be able to do it

I think they can. The chi is in eveyone, and if they focus enough, they SHOULD be able to do it that is almost like you are saying that if anyone focuses enough, they should be able to create fire... also.. maybe a waterbender could, but not using that technique... like if the made an arc of water in front of them, they could redirect it through the water.. but that's all i can think of for that.

I see it as more of concentrating your chi paths to re-direct them. It's like making a tunnel for the lightning to pass through, and not harming the user.

Didn't Iroh say he learned it from water benders? .-. Iroh said that he figured out the technique by studying and observing the waterbenders. He watched how they redirect their opponents energy against them (a la Tai Chi), and figured out how to apply that to firebending. It seems far more likely that anything to do with lightning would be the domain of firebenders (albeit ones who have very deep knowledge of fire and how it relates to the other elements). -- SpiritBender

You are right. Aang could do it w/ hid firebending part of him, and katara could redirect it w/ her mad waterbending skilz!!!! !_!
