Yeah, he is kinda like a centipede, which, in Chinese Folklore is bad luck and the only thing that dragons are afraid of (besides steel or something like that). Bad news for Roku's dragon!!! I think I've got the facts straight. Also, it looks like his head disappears into that shell and comes out with a new face. So creepy.

That thing was freakin' creepy. I don't think I've ever watched a cartoon and had it scare me before. It's original face sort of reminds me of that one spirit that was in the movie Spirited Away. I haven't seen it in a long time, but it was the spirit that came to the bath house and had that mask sort of thing on its face. And I'm pretty sure in InuYasha, there was a creature that had no face. But it took away the souls of dead children or something like that. I think. I don't remember. I've found that in Japanese lore, face-stealing monsters are actually very common. ; At least, from what I've seen in anime.

The creature from "Spirited Away" was called No-Face or Noh-Face (in the English dub). His name could also be a play on words, because his "face" looks like the masks used in Noh drama. There were three creatures that didn't have faces in Inuyasha. One was the "Un-Mother", as told earlier in the thread, the other "Muso", and there was a flesh-eating mask that clung to the faces of its victims until they rotted into a mess. The one creature that lead the souls of dead children, the Soul Piper, had a face but it merely kept its eyes closed when the souls are willing to go to the afterlife. However, if the soul is malevolent or unwillinging to go, the Soul Piper's eyes open and it takes to the soul to Hell.

He stole the face of a past avatar's love. I don't get how that could happen unless female entered the spirit world which is impossible to enter w/o being the avatar, i think.

Then the woman was enlightened, possibly, then, which, like Iroh, enables her to enter the Spirit World, communicate & see spirits. Since there's the talk of her being an Air Nomad, maybe she was one of the female Monks? :/ But then, again, there's that lack of arrows, which is the sign of a Master Airbender (but then, again, she might be a Firebender... -.- so can you become enlightened without mastering your Element? I should think so, because normal non-benders (inferior! _V_+ <- Zhao) should be able to reach Enlightenment too...

Or maybe she encountered Koh during the Winter Solstice.
Remember when Sokka and those other guys from that village got snatched up by Hei Bai?
During the week of the Winter Solstice, the Spirit and the Living World merge and weird stuff happens like regular people being able to see and interact with the spirits.

I actually did a report on the Noh Plays last year for a Japanese final. I wasn't aware that it actually meant that they had... no face... XD *stupid?* Ohhh. I stopped watching InuYasha a few years back, and didn't actually see the episode I was thinking about. Just heard about it from a friend. Golly, I feel dumb. XD

Anyone who was warned befor faceing koh could prevail against him. All one would have to do is wear a mask. Make one from one of the trees in the spirit world.Just a blank mask with slits for your eyes and mouth. Now if he ripped that mask off your face that would be a differant situation XD.~AR~

Then you could just cover your face with your hands and part your fingers just so your eyes show throughso you can see that sneaky thing. Something tells me he wouldnt like being outwitted and Ill bet he could be a formidable opponent. ~AR~

He'll probably just take my face the moment I walk past him.

Since there's the talk of her being an Air Nomad, maybe she was one of the female Monks? :/ But then, again, there's that lack of arrows, which is the sign of a Master Airbender Could it be that the Noh doesn't take tattoos, just the person's actual face? Honestly though, I don't remember very well any of the faces it displayed... Feh. I said "the Noh." I meant Ko. or Koh, or whatever it is. I'm just so used to Noh that it's hard to remember this spirit's name is different...
