Varrick is hilarious. This episode was a nice change of pace. Bryke are really good at doing that. Lightening things up near the end, but moving the story along. It's definitely one of the reasons that I love the Avatar universe that they have created so much.
And I really loved seeing more of Bolin. I didn't particularly care for them portraying him as being so stupid and dense. I didn't get those vibes from Book 1, so I thought it was strange that they took that approach in this season. Maybe that's how others see him, like Varrick and Ruby. I see him as having a really good heart and expecting the best from people. It seems like he really feels like people say what they mean, or act how they feel, which isn't always the case. So that's probably what got him to be used as a pawn by Varrick and to misunderstand Ruby.
I also liked that Bolin was the star instead of Mako. Mako is just kind of frustrating for me to watch... I love their relationship as brothers though.
It's pretty awesome to see all these sibling relationships this season. And well as parental relationships. Those are things we only got a glimpse of through Katara, Sokka, and Hakoda. Through the airbending kids, Pema and Tenzin, Tenzin and his siblings, Korra's family. We really are given a whole new experience.
I hate to say it, but most of the parental relationships in A:tLA were pretty broken. You could argue that the whole Gaang were practically orphans. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I like seeing these other kinds of relationships portrayed in such a realistic manner. There aren't many other shows that do that.
