Korra has officially picked up for a second season! What's most exciting is that Nick has ordered 26 episodes! I'm hoping this means better character development and more nuanced story telling. I think the abbreviated first season really had an impact on the writing so hearing that there will be a full 26 episodes next season really has me pumped. Details for Book 2 from the 2012 San Diego Comic Con can be found here!

26 episodes? Thank goodness. Hopefully it will have a better placed plot, some actual character development.... And only a tad bit of filler.
I never realized how important filler could be until I watched Korra.

Oh! That's.... great? Wait, I thought we already knew that there was going to be a second season, and that it was going to be the remaining 14 episodes? So there's 26 more new episodes ordered, for a complete series total of 52? Well that's great, but from the article it doesn't sound like they actually know yet how the episodes will be split up, though they presume that it will be divided for Books 3 and 4. Regardless of how it's split up though, I do hope that the fan reactions have shown Bryke that the "character stuff" is just as important as the main plot. There was a WSJ interview with them last month where they said they preferred this short-season format and that they are more interested in telling a really driving plot. Also that even if there is an interesting side character or story, unless it serves the main plot, they won't go into it. :/ It'll be interesting to see if the writing for Mako will change for these later episodes; I don't think they were expecting so many fans to dislike him. But SDCC is coming up soon; there will probably be more information on the plans for the 26 new episodes by then.

Another 26 episodes sounds good as, in my opinion, the more the better! I do worry about what Bryke said in the interview that Musogato linked to though. I personally dislike the shorter format that it appears they will be going with for future seasons. If more episodes just means more story and less/ the same character development then I will be disappointed. Also the lack of video game (something that I would quite like to see) and their general answer to the video game question leaves me disappointed. That question was their opportunity to comment on any possible merchandising or general Korra related stuff but they didn't, just the comics (which are good by the way, I would just have liked more). I absolutely love the whole Avatar universe and concept, Bryke's responses just leave me somewhat underwhelmed as to what to expect from it in the future.

Guys, can you remember if ATLA was approved on a piece-meal basis like this?

I don't think it was, at least not for the later seasons. I can't find any old-news announcements for when ATLA's season two was picked up, but Book 1 had finished on December 2, 2005 and Book 2 began on March 6, 2006. With only a three month break, it must have been picked up early on because of how long it takes to make the episodes. However I did find a press release announcement on June 21, 2006 saying all of Book 3 was greenlit, which would have been mid-way through Book 2's airing. For Book 1, according to the ATLA Art book, only the first 13 episodes were greenlit, and then the rest of the season's episodes were picked up as the show did well. But I think there's a bit of a difference as well, since ATLA was from the start going to be a three-season story, and with LOK we really have no idea because (for the first season at least) was supposed to be self-contained. Although maybe it just feels different because the LOK seasons are so short?

So there's 26 more new episodes ordered, for a complete series total of 52? Hmmm.... Isn't 52 the number of episodes you need for any given series for it to go into syndication?

Some clarification from Bryke here. Well, the seasons are still short but now that the writers know what they have to work with, hopefully this will impact the writing in a positive way. I understand the appeal of a plot driven show, but I really REALLY hope they focus more on the characters. It's so much harder getting invested in a show (even if all the action is really great) if you can't get behind the characters.

And the fandom rejoiced.
Really, I'm quite thrilled about this. We've never had a story with a fully realized Avatar before (at least not until the last episodes). The threats will have to be of a different nature than before, in such a way that they can't be dealt with strictly by force or else the Avatar would win handily all the time (and that would get a little boring). Looking foward to seeing how they tackle this.

I am thrilled that more episodes have been ordered, because I really did enjoy Korra. But I am disappointed that it still doesn't look like we are going to get much more character development. I think that took a lot away from Korra. Since every character that had even a minor backstory ended up coming back with some much bigger purpose a lot of the "twists" were predictable. There is something to be said to learning a little about that characters outside the main plot. It just seems more real, because of course they still have lives even when they are dealing with the "bad guy". I was upset to see Bryan basically say that fans could explore the characters through fan fiction instead of actually putting into the show.
However, even with the lack of development I enjoy these characters and am glad that we will be seeing more of them and more of Republic City.

Korra's uncle looks a lot more...well to do...than her dad.
Or maybe that's just because Tonraq has his shirt off...

congrats on your everything Zuko.
I'm loving Korra and Asami's new looks - my fabulous hbics, though I'm wondering about Lin and Iroh! And I'm hoping Ursa and Zuko get brought in at some point, though I wonder if that'll be saved for Books 3 and 4 since this seems to be a lot about Republic City and the rest about the North and South WTs and Spirit World. Maybe 3 and 4 will respectively take place in the Earth Kingdom (would be nice to see how they've changed!)
Anywho, the spirit monster from the panel looks kinda like a heartless lol - but I'm excited to find out what's up with that. I wonder if there will be a human connection to the wonkiness of the spirit world?
