I agree Bolin definitely made the right decision. While he seems to like to think of himself as a big payer in the pro-bending world, deep down he realizes that he is a young bender and that if experienced benders were falling at the hand of Amon, he had no chance. Trying a new tactic was really the only smart option he had.

Do you mean Bolin? Anyway, I think it is safe to assume that Mako and Bolin's father was a member of the Fire Nation, even a firebender. Which means their mother was a member of the Earth Kingdom and/or an earthbender. I say this because Mako revealed the scarf to have belonged to his father in the fourth episode and it seems red scarves are associated with the Fire Nation/firebenders.

Well actually, its probably more likely their Mako and Bolin's mother and father were from one of the Firenation Colonies. The nickelodian korra site, (which I really recommend to go read, its full of facts and story tidbits that explain so much.) detailed the problem of the firenation colonies after the war. Long story short, some of the older colonies were so established (and intermarried with the earthnation) that they didn't want to leave. Which led to a series of incidents (which again, I recommend the korra site which goes into detail) and this inspired zuko to propose republic city to aang. As such Mako and Bolin's parents could have simply been republic citizens, or maybe they were from one of the other firenation colonies.

A person from the colonies especially a firebender would be loosely generalized as being from the fire nation and same goes for an earthbender being from the earth kingdom at least to us. In the actual Avatar world I'm sure that's not the case because its been 70 years since the war, whereas for us its hardly anytime at all so we would refer to a firebender as automatically being from the firenation.

By the way, to anyone who's seen the fourth episode, is it just me or is Mako pretty suave when it comes to ladies? Especially after his initial meeting with Asami. He seemed pretty comfortable in the restaurant. I thought Bolin was supposed to be the ladies man...

avatarluv, I noticed Mako's suaveness in the restaurant too, as well as how he handled himself when he met Hiroshi Sato. It was very impressive. Maybe it runs in the genes?

Could Mako be loosely compared to Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV?
One wants to take care of their younger brother and another wants to take care of their family, primarily his cousin.

So some new things we learned about the boys in the past few episodes:
-Mako is mad strong. Stronger than Bolin somehow. Still not sure if he's stronger than Korra, though... -Mako (at least) knows how to read and cook -Both boys know how to swim -Bolin can apparently talk to animals

There are threads existing for both Mako and Bolin individually now.
