I figured we needed a thread to discuss the brothers. I'm looking forward to their interactions with each other. And their background story since we've been told they were street orphans. I wonder how old they were when they ended up on the streets... I've also been wondering about their parentage. I wonder if it would be possible that they are descendants of Avatar Kyoshi, since we know she had a daughter.

I'm interested in getting some more backstory too on the brothers I like to call Mario and Luigi. (Seriously check out their color palette's and tell me the resemblance isn't there ;D) Hopefully Bryke will have some episodes to fill up some backstory for the characters.
But on their parentage I doubt that they're descended from Avatar Kiyoshi since Kiyoshi Island is all the way in the southern Earth Kingdoms while Republic City is all the way north where the oldest Fire Nation colonies were established. Presumably any descendants she may have had may have been raised and live there still after they broke off from the mainland. So it's doubtful that Bolin and Mako are descended from Avatar Kiyoshi.
I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying odds are low.

I like Bolin more than Mako. Bolin is very cute and nice. Mako is not a special character. Well you gotta understand where Mako and Bolin come from. They were/are orphans. We're not sure whether they always have been due to the war or whether they we're abandoned or their parents died/were killed. We have yet to find all that out. Regardless, as the older brother Mako has had to take on the responsibility of raising Bolin [playing parent and making sure Bolin is nourished and safe] in what is surely to be a cruel world to orphan children. He's probably had to mature faster than most and as such probably never had much of a childhood hence why he appears so serious. This kid surely has trust issues, no doubt. Besides the Mario and Luigi brothers resemblance you could say it's kinda like a Seto Kaiba/Mokuba Kaiba resemblance. Both were orphans. Older brother who has to take on all responsibility [not the friendliest of blokes due to that] and the sweet, innocent brother who was taken care of and so is just easier to get along with.

There have only been two episodes and people are already judging? Yeah, idk. I'm not really sure what my opinion is on Mako and Bolin tbh... the only thing I saw them do is, well, fight? And make one comment about being afraid of getting disqualified from the pro-bending tournament. So maybe I'm missing something but I don't know where all this information about Mako and Bolin is coming from aside from the little blurbs on Nick's website.

Yes you are right. At the moment I like Bolin more, but it is possible I will change my mind I'm a sucker for the Mako type [Darn. Mike and Bryan got me there]. I don't want to get ahead of myself but I feel Mako's character will eventually, with time and much roughing up from Korra, will come to evolve as a character. He's always going to be the responsible type to look after his little bro, no doubt, but he may come to be a better team player. He's very independent [not to mention skilled!] and from the way he talked to the original Waterbender in their team he's not the best team player. He definitely strikes me as those who insists there is an 'I in team' I think the road will be bumpy-may not want to collaborate in a group at first but he will eventually come to realize he needs or can at least accept help from others. Side note: I guess I like Mako so much because I myself am a younger sibling like Bolin ^_^ His persona just reminds me of an older sibling [like mine] who had to take on a lot of responsibilities and had to look out for me/show me the ropes when we we're both growing up meanwhile I had more freedom to goof around as the youngest.

I personally relate to Mako in the sense of the older sibling syndrome, so that's why I like him more. Not to say I was raising myself and my orphaned brother, but there's a certain burden placed on older siblings to bear some of the responsibility (and depending on the age gap, that burden can feel stronger). My brother and I are only 18 months apart, which is really close in age, but I spent a lot of time helping him with his schoolwork/projects, driving him places, working and going to school, and pulling generally a lot more weight around. He mostly had school obligations but got to do a lot more fun and had a lot less responsibility.
Mako's trust issues probably stem from growing up on the streets without parents, so it's easy to see why his motto might be, "There's no 'I' in team, but there is a 'me' if you rearrange the letters." After a certain point, you come to find out you're the only person you can rely on; his only exception being Bolin (to a degree, anyway). It's possible though, and I expect, we'll see his character grow, and even come to trust Korra as a member of his team, especially as the issues with the anti-bending movement start to come to head.

I think that it was difficult for me to relate to Mako's character because of the situation in which we first met him: he's clearly a team leader, and all of his focus was on the game. I kept waiting for that really brilliant line that would set him apart from everyone else as a major character, and we kind of got one ("You're the Avatar and I'm an idiot.") with a little humor in it. But when I first saw Zuko on-screen, I knew he was a freakin tortured soul. When I saw Aang I knew he was a bundle of energy. When I saw Mako all I saw was his game face (understandably), but because of that I can't really tell what I'm supposed to think about this character yet. As for Bolin? It's going to be a lot different telling a story about older teenagers than telling a story about kids. I like that the creators aren't shying away from the new dynamic. Let's be real: Bolin is basically the cutest little playa ever.

With the third episode, I have a feeling Bolin has a chip on his shoulder. Mako's protective nature is making him feel like a useless child and he's not comfortable with that. He wants to prove he can pull his own weight. Hopefully it won't lead him in the wrong direction...

^Yes, Bolin is definitely trying to establish himself as more than the little brother Mako takes care of. It's clear that there is more to his character than just the wise cracking lady's man.
I enjoyed getting to see a little more of their relationship in the most recent episode. You can definitely tell that Mako feels very responsible for Bolin.

I think Bolin is trying to establish himself as more than Mako's responsibility/burden, and wants to help pull his own weight. I want there to be more to his character, but seriously? He ticked me off last episode. When he was held hostage on stage by the Equalists and they released him from his binds before Amon took his bending away, his logic was to plead/beg Amon for mercy. Bolin didn't know that Mako and Korra were there to save him; he had no one he knew of to save him, but instead, he chose to try and reason with a clearly unreasonable person. Instead of trying to protect/defend himself and his bending. It kind of disappointed me, tbh.

Episode three definitely cemented it for me, I love these brothers! <3 I love how protective Mako is, but as a younger sibling I definitely relate more to Bolin. The boy is just flat-out adorable, and somehow is still innocent and naive despite having lived on the streets. Mako must have done an amazing job for Bolin to still be like that. But obviously that's where their conflict is going to lead as well -- Mako is still trying to take care of everything on his own, and Bolin isn't a little kid anymore. But at the same time, Bolin seems inexperienced with real-world stuff, and has some growing up to do. But I love how they look out for each other, and that scene when Mako saves Bolin from the Equalist is 100% my favorite scene. xD
Personally, I also love that Bolin tried to talk with Amon instead of just fighting, because it shows what kind of person he is. Not to mention that with how it turned out for the clearly experienced mobsters who fought and lost to Amon, it never hurts to try a different tactic. And seeing how the brothers fought against the Lieutenant, they're going to need some real bending training as well.
