I don't feel the episode was contrived or forced at all especially with regards to the mood of a shipping episode in contrast with the trauma Korra suffered in the previous episode.
Korra just suffered a traumatic incident largely due to her involvement with Tarrlok's Anti-Equalist Task Force. So it makes sense to me that maybe Tenzin advised her to take a break from her duties as the Avatar and hunting Amon by encouraging her to focus on her training and doing what she likes to do. (which I believe in this case is probending and hanging out with her 2 friends) And by hanging out with her friends we are reminded in this episode that there is another side to Korra and being a teenager than being the young Avatar with the responsibility of the world on her shoulders. It seemed more realistic.
I think it's a very nice change of pace. Granted I can understand why some found it jarring when contrasted with last episodes events. I agree that maybe some exposition like a scene involving Korra talking to Tenzin about getting some advice to take a break from hunting Amon would have been just the ticket to ease the transition in the first place but with so little episodes there's only so much they can cram into so little time.
As far as the shipping goes it seemed plenty realistic to me. Mako, Bolin and Korra have known and hang out with each other for weeks, if not months. They should know each other pretty well by now in the way that teammates do. I imagine their relationships have progressed to where they wanted to try something different in the case of Bolin and Korra.
Korra really got the raw end of romantic advice from Pema and the kids. Seriously that was just bad. Sweet and straightforward but bad. Despite the fact it supposedly worked for Pema this is clearly not a case of what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
As for Mako and Bolin's situation? I can only say that I didn't find it that cringeworthy in terms of teenage drama cheese since I could relate to their situations very well based on personal experience. But that's just me.
Over all I found this episode very very entertaining and a nice change of pace from the last episode. I am honestly looking forward to the next one.
And the probending parts were awesome too!
