He finds out his family was imprisoned/tortured/harmed by benders.
Jet-esque, but it comes as a shocking revelation, especially when compounded with benders mistreating nonbenders, etc..

Hmm, maybe. But wouldn't that partially depend on what element those benders were? It also seems to be more prejudice based (like Jet and the Firebenders, but that didn't extend to earth/water benders), and nonbenders can be just as lethal and mistreating as benders can be. Although if it's some sort of heightened abuse of bending abilities, or if the society is slipping into a caste based on bending ability, then...
Actually, wasn't there something in one of the summer interviews about it relating to an X-Men... something? Registration act? Maybe as time has gone by, people with bending abilities have become antiquated, and so they're seen more as freaks now instead of the norm. And maybe along with the tragic past, there's peer/societal pressure on Mako to turn away from Korra?

And maybe along with the tragic past, there's peer/societal pressure on Mako to turn away from Korra? That's along the line of what I was thinking. Perhaps he's a non-bender who has so far stayed out of the conflict, but something happens to further anger the non-benders are and they begin to look at Mako as a traitor. They could possibly use some kind of blackmail or something to turn him against Korra.

Oh gosh the Maiko/Mako similarity didn't even cross my mind! DX That would be absolutely ridiculous......
I do like the suggestion of him and Korra having the opposite relationship of Mai and Zuko, with them ending the series apart. Korra gives off vibes that she's very independent and it could be nice for her to end the series with a triumph and new beginning.

I didn't know I had responded to this topic and came in to post the exact same thing. Glad to know that I haven't grown at all in the past 6 months.

I'm not sold on Mako, right now he seems too much like Zuko but without as much emotional baggage. He definally needs more time to grow as a character.

Aw, I don't think we've seen nearly enough of him to have his character pegged just yet. His eyebrows do remind me of Jet, though. Hope that's not a bad indicator. Given the ending of the second episode and scenes in the "this season on Lok" clip, it seems clear that Mako is Korra's romantic interest. Apparently they're going to have some sort of conflict over Bolin's kidnapping ...tension!

Does that have to be in spoiler bars? It was on the Nick season preview, which was aired publicly for everyone to see this weekend. But anyways, considering that other scene in the preview, I think it's pretty safe to say there will be something between Mako and Korra. And yeah, I don't think we've seen enough of him yet to judge him as just completely dull and grumpy. I think he'll be interesting. Zuko was one of my fav characters in the original, so I'm excited for Mako's development.

To me Mako already seems plenty interesting enough. He is silent, focused and not as prone to tantrums and violent outbursts than Zuko. It will be interesting to see how his character develops as the series progresses. I definitely want to see more episodes like ATLA's "the Storm" where it was had more character development/exposition and not so much plot advancement.

@krystalfruit22: Not sure - I was just playing it safe in case there are people waiting for the network premiere.
I'm really liking the personality dynamic between the members of Team Korra. They're definitely a lot snappier than the Gaang!

Zuko was one of my fav characters in the original, so I'm excited for Mako's development. Not everyone has seen or has access to this preview you speak of. I haven't seen it. Officially...if you're talking about Korra within the Korra sub-board, you don't actually need to use spoiler tags...but we ask you to do so everywhere else. Not everyone has the same access to the episodes, or even the ads, as everybody else. We have members here from all over the world, and those of us not in the US couldn't watch the KorraNation premier. And there are also those who want to be surprised and may not want to know what's coming up. General rule of thumb I'd go with...if in doubt, use spoiler tags. And now...about Mako. I agree with those who have said that we don't really know enough about his character to really form an opinion. First impression to me is that he's a bit of a jerk, though. But given that he and his brother apparently grew up on the streets, it's more likely a wall he's built in order to survive than his actually not caring about others. He's highly focused and he has his mind set on winning pro-bending to no doubt better his situation.

He's also quite humble when he has to be, seeing as he was quite willing to admit he was an idiot.

@ilz, Yeah, I would like to see some other character archetypes as well. They did really well with Zuko's transformation, so hopefully they'll be covering new ground instead of rehashing it. I would like to see it inverted - her friend/lover/whatever turns to the dark side. Ooh, that would be interesting. I kind of have trouble understanding how this would happen though. If the dude is close to Korra, then he would understand the benefits/history/etc of bending, right? So... whatever the anti-bending movement is really about, it would have to be even closer to him in order for him to turn away from Korra. Or a conflict of interest, maybe? Perhaps not, because even Korra doesn't get the spiritual aspect behind bending. She's just about the fighting and physical behind it, which is proving the case of the Equalists. All probending is doing is turning the art of bending into a money making spectator sport. Like Lin Bei Fong, No one in the generation seems interested in history of it or what the benefits and risks are except Tenzin. Just my thoughts.
