Well, Aang hasn't completed his training, and therefore hasn't mastered the disciplines and thinking behind each bending. Even though he DID have that breathing exercise from Jeong Jeong, all he learned was that control was key; without control, he would end up destroying everything.
Let's rewind and see how far Aang has come along:
1. Airbending - a respect for life and fun. He uses his bending to have fun, as well as to defend himself.
2.Waterbending - the focus is balance, as symbolized by the yinyang symbol Aang sees at the North Pole. Throughout season 1, Aang must accept that the world he is now in is very different from the world he knew 100 years ago, and his destiny. To bring balance to the world, he must bring inner peace and balance to himself first. Also, according to Iroh, waterbenders redirect their opponent's energy. This is Aang's first step in fighting back: rather than only defending himself, he will also take the offensive. He begins to learn how to transition from defense to offense and vice versa.
3. Earthbending- this bending discipline teaches Aang about sturdiness. He must be rooted both mentally and physically. He learns to endure the hardships that are thrown at him at every turn: Azula, the loss of Appa, the Dai Li, etc etc. It also changes his mindset: rather than coming in at different angles, and sometimes even avoiding the problem, he takes it headon. Neutral jin also is about waiting and listening, according to Bumi; Aang learns how to wait and look for a weakness to strike.
So far, Aang has learned to defend as well as counterattack and defeat his opponent. But he is only 3/4 the way there. Firebending is about the offensive, and taking the initiative. Once Aang masters that discipline, he will be fully realized and whole not only as an Avatar, but as a fighter as well. As he hasn't mastered firebending yet, he is not quite ready to take down Azula or Ozai.
Alleluia: While the Dai Li can throw pillars into Aang's path, I still think he can still run faster with the help of his Airbending. When he came across the Yu Yan archers, we saw how he manouevered through the trees. Even if a wall were to come up in front of him, I trust his reflexes, which all 3 bending styles have honed, to react fast enough and bust through the wall. After all, in the Runaway, we see he can sense the earth just like Toph, dodging what is coming at him. If he can sense that, then I think he can sense what the Dai Li would throw his way.
