Mike and Bryan finally reveal their new project Avatar: The Legend of Korra with a lot of influences from 1920's Shanghai along with some Western ones such as Manhattan and Vancouver. Apparently, Aang has a son now.

Wait a minute, is Republic City the reformed version of Ba Sing Se?

Moving this to Legend of Korra board. And yeah, according to Mike and Bryan's interview with WSJ, there's going to be a lot of time spent at Republic City. I am curious how it relates to Ba Sing Se, but my guess is that it was built somewhere else since the mountain range in the preview pic looks different. Although it was said in the interview that the look may change, so, who knows?

Hate the name Republic City, but whatever. It sounds like all four nations are once again living together in harmony, so it gets the point across I guess.
It'll be interesting if the locations pretty static since it changed so much in A:TLA. Could be good, bad or just different.

Republic City will be on a soon to be discovered continent that mimics New York. That'll be the twist. I guess they were tired of limiting themselves to Eastern influences and decided to add some Western ones as well. Except they'd probably do it better than Shyamalan tried to do. I don't get why they specified Vancouver, landscape maybe?

I think they're wanting to progress the series, as time has passed and it's now 70 years later, they've moved into a more modern era. But I would bet that the four nations may be diplomatically living in harmony, but realistically still have conflicts. Especially if Republic City is supposed to be a melting pot with the different groups mixed in. It definitely opens an opportunity for discrimination, or making districts based on "ethnicity" (or rather, nation) like there are in cities like LA or NYC.

Republic City sounds awkward... But it still fits I suppose for the purposes of the story Bryke and Co. are looking to tell.
If anything RC could be a city state much like the other Earth Kingdoms seemed to be with their own dominion and territories but sharing a common nationality. Moreover with the idea of people from different nations coming to live in this place, it certainly sounds like the influence of Aang and the Gaang has had a definite impact on the people of the four nations post-100 years World War of Fire. This city could be the result of the Gaang's efforts to restore balance to the world after the events of the last story arc.

Haven't read much yet so forgive me if anyone's said this already, but I'm suddenly wondering if Republic City could be anything like Babylon 5. (I always used to compare A:TLA to that show because it had a 5-year story arc planned from the outset and Avatar had a 3-year story arc planned from the outset.) And the idea of different nations living together in this city is alot like different alien races living together on the space station...

So Repub. City = Western Influences like a melting pot? I don't know if it's going to be straight Western Influences, but the article makes it seem like it's going to be East with the West starting to spill over and influence the culture/standards. Here's a theory; perhaps the "non-benders" are going to be pushing towards modernization of the world, and the benders will be in support of the traditional lifestyle with connection to the spirit world and elements. I might be placing TOO much on how central a theme the conflict between benders and non-benders is, but it's a thought that popped into my head.

Manhattan for the city (obviously), 1920's Shanghai for it's culture, and Vancouver for it's landscaping. If you haven't noticed, most of the Western influences in the show were pretty basic in terms of things the rest of the world does.

I have the same theory too... especially with Bryke's mention of advancing the setting of the Avatar's world with implication of widespread use of steampunk tech where the world at large 70 years ago had to rely on benders to do what Science might now seem to replace. I can definitely see ordinary people looking at steam tech to liberate them from the older generations dependence on benders and bending and this could be a cause for the anti-bender revolt that was mentioned.
