How have the Characters changed since introduced?

Let's talk about how our favorite main characters have changed since we met them to the end of the series. This does not just character development but also bending, skills, and etc.

If there any positive changes then include.

An big example would be Zuko.

I am not going into detail on Zuko but let me do a little.

When we first met him his main concern was capturing the avatar to restore his honor in the fire nation sense and to have Ozai's love so he can resolve daddy issues.

By the end of the series he was friends with the avatar and helped Aang on his journey. He also didn't need his father to give him a better life.

Then you guys can add more and yatta yatta. Don't forget the others in Team Avatar and etc

Y'know, it was weird going back to the beginning of the series and seeing how whiny Katara was. She REALLY grew up as the series progressed. Makes me appreciate her character all the more seeing how confidant and powerful she became over the course of the show's run.

Sokka would be a definite shoe in for character who matured the most for me in the series. He started out as a worry-wart stick in the mud, but later became more focused, disciplined and tolerant person. A man his father would have been proud to call his son. All this while still remaining goofy and kinda flaky, which I think made his character more compelling as a result.

I guess I'm not seeing how "confident and powerful" is the antithesis of "whiny'--she was always the group's conscience and caretaker. Did this only become tolerable because she became a masterful bender?

Watching the characters mature as the series progressed was one of the most interesting aspects of this show. It was made even better by the fact that while the show took place in about a years time, to the fans it took four years, so we were maturing right along with them.

Of course Zuko is the one that goes through some of the biggest changes, since his entire outlook on life changes. At the beginning of the series, he is focused on one thing and one thing alone, capturing the Avatar. He will do anything to accomplish this task and please his dad. He ignores almost all of Iroh's lessons, because they do not always fit with the "general" Fire Nation thinking. Zuko is also not much of a fighter or a very successful bender, learning only the basic moves. Through a lot of ups and downs, that drove most of the fans insane, Zuko finally realizes that while his destiny does indeed involve Aang, it has nothing to do with capturing him. Zuko goes against everything that once defined him to help Aang. One of the most powerful scenes in the series, in my opinion, is when he stands up to Ozai. Not only does this show his progression as a character into the "right' side, it always showcases the amazing bending abilities he has acquired since we first saw him training on his ship.

Aang had the most growing up to do of any of the characters. When you go back and watch the first season, it is clear that Aang is still very much a kid. While he never completely looses his fun spirit, by the end of the series, he has come a very long way from the boy in the iceberg. Pretty much all at once he has the fate of his people, and his mission to face the Firelord piled upon him. But it takes him a while to truly feel that the weight of the world rests on his shoulders, and as he realizes how dire and time restricted his task is, he becomes more focused, and really matures as a character. This maturing, I think is the reason that he finally got a relationship with Katara, he no longer seemed like a little kid to her. Over the course of the show he learns a lot about who he is as the Avatar as well as who is as Aang. And of course his bending skills improved tremendously since he learned three new elements.

Katara's main change, I believe, is her bending abilities. She became a master in only a few short weeks of formal training which is an amazing feat. Watching her waterbend in the later episodes, it's hard to imagine that doing a water whip was too difficult for her only a few months earlier. Since she lost her mother young, Katara had already grown up a lot so she stayed pretty consistent personality-wise throughout the show. Of course she had moments where her aged showed, but that just made her more human.

In the beginning Sokka was the skeptical, hungry, complaining guy who had some skill with a boomerang. Sokka had a whole lot of life changing moments throughout the series, that often were pushed to the backburner because of everything going on at the time. By the end of the show though, he is able to accept that everyone from the Fire Nation isn't evil, he becomes a lot more skillful with his boomerang as well as with a sword, and he also falls in love with Suki. He also finally sees himself as a man, not the little boy who was too young to fight a war. As the series progressed he earned a much stronger place in the team, and was crucial to the final battle.
