Aside from the fact that they're a separate island along side the Earth Kingdom. I always see them writing Chinese or using Chinese names. Some of their clothing looks more Chinese than Japanese. Are they really suppose to be Japanese?

Although the premise of Avatar was based on Eastern-Asian cultures, other than the Chinese calligraphy, there aren't any direct links to our world in terms of Nation-to-Nation. The Fire Nation could be seen as a representative form of an industrial and imperialistic nation in its prime.

Like said above--the races in Avatar are not based on one race or another no links to our world at all. But I can see why so many people think that.

It isn't like Hetalia where each nation is a specific commentary on a specific real-world country, but the Fire Nation and the other nations do borrow a ton of references and other specifics from various Asian countries and time periods. For example, the dresses that Song and her mom wear are Hanboks, traditional Korean dresses. ( Real hanbok // Song's hanbok) All of the nations use a mix of those resources, and the Art Book mentions some of those of references for the characters/locations. I still haven't been able to get it yet though, so I can't find specific things in it at the moment. For Japanese influences in the Fire Nation though, I've heard the Meiji Restoration era, the Feudal eras, and Imperialistic Japan mentioned. There are a lot of Chinese references as well, especially for the clothing, and obviously the writing which all of the nations use. ATLA is confirmed in the I.P. Bible as an "ancient, fantastical Asian environment, primarily Chinese." So it makes sense that if the world is Asian, so are the people in it, even if they cannot be pinned to a specific nationality because all of the nations are mixed in their real-world resources.

Does the Fire Nation also use Iceland for it's terrain inspiration?

Yeah, I think that was mentioned on one of the dvd commentaries. It was more than just a mentioning. Bryan wouldn't shut up about his trip.

Hehe. Well, it has been a few years since I watched them. Still, I hear Iceland is pretty, so can't really blame him. (well, maybe it's changed some since that volcano went off...)
