That was a great video clip. Loved Dante's comment but kinda wished it had come out much much sooner.

lol, " Not once did I hear them say MOMO!" true. they didn't. Aang actually said "Momo, be nice" in the spirit oasis when Momo tried grabbing one of the spirit fish. And on a side note I was happy that Aang said "Yip Yip" he only said it once but that was enough to make me happy. This movie in no way should be tied to the Avatar the last airbender franchise.

Sounds like the fans are aangry. *groan* ______ Fanboys. This is bringing back so many lovely memories of the Star Wars prequels. What they wanted was a photographer, not a painter. As much as I feel this film could have been better, I shudder to think how an uberfan would have handled it at the helm. I agree, I wasn't impressed by the film, but I feel like credit needs to be given where credit is due. Let's get one thing clear: adaptations of this sort are hard. Time constraints and the conventions of storytelling put a cap on what is able to be told in a coherent fashion. Given the vast amount of material in Book 1, I think M. Night did a good job condensing it. Not perfect by any stretch, but good. Some parts needed to have been reworked (the Earthbenders scene) and an extra 30 minutes, used properly, would have helped flesh out the characters more. I can't pretend to know what M. Night was thinking, but I do know that he's nowhere near as bad as Ed Wood or Uwe Boll. It could have been a lot better, but it could have been a lot worse.

I agree that adapting a 20-episode season is an incredibly challenging project, but I imagine that an "uberfan" would at the very least capture the essence of the characters and story, whereas Shyamalan purposely went in the opposite direction. Painter vs Photographer is an interesting argument, but with the amount that Shyamalan changed, this movie is no longer an adaption of the tv show, but a loosely-based re-imagining of. And I think that is where a lot of the fan anger is stemming from -- they're expecting to see their show in live-action, or at least a good movie, and they're getting neither.
Perhaps if the movie was advertised as such from the beginning -- not as an adaption of the Nickelodeon show, but Shyamalan's re-imagining of it, more people would have gone in with different expectations. Of course, there were a number of people who did go in knowing of all the changes and still came out listing things that were wrong with it, so it's not all just fanboyism. (and fangirlism).
I'm actually curious about how the movie could have been worse though... I mean, not including changing the rating so there'd be gore and other adult themes (which is in the 'worse' category because this is supposed to be viewable for kids). With lines like "We need to show them that we believe in our beliefs as much as they believe in their beliefs," ...how much farther down the rabbit hole can it go? By cutting out Shaun Toub as Iroh, since I hear he did well with the character? I am now genuinely curious about this.

I just saw it today. After reading all the bad reviews, I expected much worse. I really liked the CG elements and Appa & Momo. It's too bad the CG artists got themselves involved in this movie. It seemed M. Night was trying too hard to get the main storyline across too quick and the side stories/backgrounds we too rushed to make much sense. The importance of the interaction between the gaang seems to have been undervalued by M. Night, as well as the opportuinities that really could have given the characters their own identity/personality. The acting I blame mainly on M. Night's script. The scene where Aang was released from the ice, then suddenly was sitting in a Watertribe tent . The conversation Katara and Aang had in that tent could have been written by a kindergartener. That was where things started to go wrong for me, much too rushed. Even an A-list actor couldn't have made that conversation work. M. Night is just not the kind of director to bring these characters to life. But I did enjoy seeing the Southern Watertribe city and the SFX.

The first movie was....good...not great... But these three movies, if there is two more...I hope there is because: Anyone here like Star Trek? Well, maybe....just maybe the movies will be like the movies for Star Trek; the first one wasn't vey good, the second one was awesome and the third one was ok. Maybe the same thing will happen to The Last Airbender. I really don't want the fandom to be at war...

I wonder, for those of us who haven't seen the movie and now don't want to expose ourselves to the horrible sight... could we just send Bryke a check for $7 to put for funding of Legend of Korra? The more I hear the more depressed I get...

I haven't seen it yet, and I'll probably just watch it on TVShack because I don't feel this compelled to watch the film, but every interview I've read from Shyamalan basically says this:
I'm Asian, so it's okay.

As an Asian I didn't really care if the actors are white playing asian characters as long as they are actually good actors. However I have some pride as an Asian American because I want to see asians playing lead roles in Hollywood movies to get better appreciation.
Though there were those Rush Hour movies with Jackie Chan which I like, he is a little old for us. It's nice to see Asians that are young playing lead roles.
When I watched this movie which was on my birthday I wasn't that angry or be sad enough to cry. I held my composure and analyzed the film to see if they faithful to the series or if the content was good enough.
My reaction to the film was composed yet confused and though it was okay. But the only thing that cried or showed anger was the true avatar fan inside of me.

I'm watching the film as we speak online, and I think what frustrates me the most is how they just sit there and explain everything to you like it's on a Powerpoint presentation... Of course if someone hasn't seen the series they'd feel left out, but in the same breath, it seems a bit sloppy.
I will admit, I do like Dev Patel in this.
