Just like to revive the issue of spirit/enegry bending.
The idea of Spirit/Energy Bending opens a whole range of possibilities in respect of bending abilities in all people and not just certain tribes of benders. The Lion Turtle said:
"In the era BEFORE THE AVATAR we bent not the elements, but the energy within ourselves."
I like the idea as it suggests an ultimate source of bending power different than those suggested by the histories or legends of each individual bending discipline(ie -the Moon for water, Dragons for Fire, Badgermoles for Earth and Air Bisons for Air). It also suggest anyone is capable of bending. The whole idea reminds me of an exchange in the movie "The Matric":
Spoon boy:Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.
I know its a completely different film but the words beautifully capture the idea that the power of the bender comes from within, not without. As everyone has a spirit, perhaps its possible to awaken the bending potential in other people rather than those just "born" with the skill.
A small bit of circumstantial evidence for my theory. In the Fire Nation, almost everyone has firebending ability. At least a far greater number than any other nation or tribe. This suggests that the emphasis of the Fire Nation's culture on Fire Bending had some sort of effect giving rise to more benders than not.
