It has been centuries since the start of the war between the four great nations of fire, earth, water, and air. No one really knows how it started, though no one really cares anymore. The once great keeper of balance, the avatar, is no longer able to maintain balance. instead, the person deemed the avatar is guarded jealously by their nation and trained as a ultimate weapon, until he passes on and the next cycle takes over, and the process begins anew. And so, the war continues unabated with no obvious end in sight.
Kat sleeps uneasy, her dreams tormented by vicious nightmares and cruel thoughts of impending doom. Suddenly jolting awake, she looks around to see everything is exactly how it should be, the small wooden cabin of the ship where her and her mother sleep, the simple dresser with her spare clothing, the wooden bowl with dried fruits to eat for breakfast, everything is exactly as it should be. A soft tapping at the door followed by the voice of her father is heard from beyond. "Kat, are you awake yet? were about to pull into land and i would like to talk with you first" he calls in, giving her privacy in case she happens to still be under dressed.

Kat jumps out of bed ands starting pulling her clothes on. "I'm awake, Dad. Give me a minute to dress."
She turns the knob on the door with both hands not wanting to make a sound and when the door was free she only pulled it open enough to fit through.
Kat turned around and asked her father, "What do you need to talk to me about?" In her pocket she fingered the metal patterns on her pocket knife. She smiled a bit when she saw a peculiar expression on her father's face.

"Today we are going to be going into battle. It is the first of many raids we will be attempting upon the earth kingdom settlements closest to our home, the north pole. i need you to stay on the ship and ensure that no one takes it while we attack" Kat's father says, patting her head lightly and lovingly. The way his strong hands and large body always seemed to protect always seemed to set her mind at ease, though for some reason, it looked out of place today.

Kat gave a reassuring smile that simply said, 'Of course Dad, you can count on me.'
Her father gave her a kiss and walked away. She watched him leave her and wondered what she'd be in this time.
With that thought in mind Kat raced in her room. She wrapped her chest and put her hair in a boyish bun. "For the pride of the water tribe." She whispered starting to put on a warriors face paint.

Kat's father felt guilty over lying to her, but there wasnt anything that could be done about it now. Looking around, he sighed deeply, knowing this would be the last time he was going to be able to see the familiar surroundings of the boat. Soon, things would no longer be simple, and the only thing he could do was to breathe deeply and pray for the best.
Later that day, Kat watched as all the skiffs and oar boats headed for the shore of a nearby area. there wasnt a village in sight that she could see, probably deeper inland. Her father waved goodbye to her from his rowboat as he led his team onto the land. She had run of the boat that was anchored aboard, her face paint covering her in a fearsome and frightful manner, much the way any boy would be dressed. She wished she could have joined them on the land, but she had an important mission to ensure the boat wasnt taken while they were away, and so she waited and waited...
several days have past and no one returned...

And Kat's hope had begun to fade.
She stood alert on the main deck even though she had barely slept in the past few days.
"Kat please rest." Her mother whispered.
She only stood there giving no response and her mother walked back inside the boat to make a meal Kat wouldn't eat.
The days were still but a tension wavered in the air when it started to shake her she would finger her knife and try to imagine that her father would come back. Evventually.

It was fast approaching night as Kat continued to stay awake, looking out to the land, hoping, praying for some sign of a returning father, some sort of faint glimmer of hope that not everything was lost or as terrible as it had seemed. So intent was she on looking to land that she failed to notice the vessel creeping up on theirs before it was already upon her. Smoke pellets rained down around her, choking the air from her lungs as the patter of feet landed all around her. The ship had been boarded by pirates!

She waited, so focused on her fathers return that she didn't notice the smoke piling down on her. She pivoted backwards and saw a crowd of pirates. The leader squared her up and she did the same. Silently, she challenged him to a duel.
The pirate struck first, but his shot only grazed her, she had shifted and dodged just in time. she switched from defense to offense when Kat swung her sword at hischest, but she only landed a small cut. They continued to exchange swings and show off skills until Kat landed one fatal blow; a deep gash aross his stomach.
One second of shock and silence and for Kat; victory. But only one, in the next second pirates were coming after Kat with all sorts of weapons froma ll angles. So Kat came back with the same thing; a boomerang, her sword, and even some waterbending, and pivoted and dodged and shifted so fast she hardly got cut or hurt. It was like some sort of cliche fight scene until there was one, whom Kat took out with one blow.
She took in her surroundings; all sorts of dead or dying bodies surrounded her and immediatly her mind shifted from water tribe warrior to teenage girl. "Ugh! I don't want to clean all these bodies up!" She whined. But it had to be done. Using only her feet Kat started to shove the men off the boat and every ker-spash she heard when one more person got shoved off made her shiver. It was one more person she had killed. She felt dirty and not just because she was covered in blood.
"Kat!" Her mother cried with only the panic a mother could imply. :You're covered in blood!"
She stared at her mother for a second, and she thought it was funny she couldn't make out her features even though she was no more than five feet away. She though she had felt dizzy because the deed she had to perform. She took a step forward and her knees buckled, she though she had been stumbling because she was scared of all the corpses.
Her mother grabbed her and drug her under the deck and took her to the bathroom. She started cleaning Kat off and finding al the cuts from her little fight. All the while Kat was dizzy and ashamed.
I'm not this weak! How can I be this weak! She kept thinking while her mother bandaged her up.
Her mother started to carry her off to her room but Kat protested, "No! I have to stay on deck and protect the ship."
Kat's mother didn't listen and kept going in her original direction.
"I'm fine Mom" She argued.
No response.
Kat wriggled her way out of her mothers grasp and raced to the deck. She nearly collapsed when she made it but still there was some sense of satisfaction. Kat's mother shook her head and folled her there with some warm blakets.
"Then at least let me stay with you tonight."
Ket smiled and shook her head- as long as she could still guard the ship. She straeched her muscles and knew that even though she was hurt, if the ship was to get invaded again, she could still fight.
