how different do you think things might have been if Iroh had become firelord instead of Ozai? would he have ended the war? would he have adopted Zuko as his heir? Would Ozai have attempted to assasainate him? If so, what would Iroh have done? It's an interesting question.

Its hard to say because youd have to factor in Firelord Azulon not being murdered into the equation. If he had lived longer who know what would have happened? This reminds me of the time felinoel was convinced that Iroh would be the next Firelord. I was right and he was wrong. Had to be said.

After the death of his son, Lu Ten, Iroh became very sympathetic and less of a war-monger, unlike his brother, father, and grandfather. I think that Iroh would have ended the war.

I think he would have ended the war, but not in the way some might think.
I think Iroh would have the foresight to see that he would be in charge of a nation that's had a war-based economy for a century, and simply issuing a decree that the war is over and recalling all his troops might cause more harm than good (like a potential revolt over their "weak" Firelord). Personally, I think he would have begun putting active forces at work to strengthen the other nations militarily while still actively putting forth war campaigns. Once the perception has been made that the Fire Nation could lose the war, Iroh could then step in quickly and negotiate peace. That way he could end the war and stay in power for the transition from wartime to peacetime (hopefully).
Or something like that. Best I could come up with in just a few minutes. All you strategically-minded types could probably come up with a better scenario.
Of course then there's Iroh's brother and niece. So long as they were around, Iroh would constantly have to be on guard against them, and they would look for any and all opportunities dethrone him or even kill him outright. I cannot see Iroh killing members of his own family, even ones as overtly evil as Ozai and Azula, so I think that his rule would have been fragile at best. I half-wonder if Iroh would have accepted the title; I daresay that even if he HADN'T lost Lu Ten, he might have figured out some way to 'disappear' - maybe even fake his own death - just to stay out of that viscious circle of plotting and political maneuvering.
