Terrific movie. The story structure was solid, the themes and character arcs were meaningful, and Carl is the best and most well developed character in the Pixar canon. Recommended more than any other movie in theaters right now.
I'm not gonna rank Pixar movies or anything, seeing as that's completely pointless and arbitrary. Anyone else seen it yet?

Things I liked- The movie was good and I liked that they turned the "youth is good" status on it's head. Carl is definitely the hero, and Russel's only good for getting in the way. Well, and piloting a house, I guess, but that's part of what got them in all that trouble- isn't it?
You CAN have adventure and family- Carl never got to take Ellie to paradise falls, yet Ellie refers to the life she lead, though domestic, as an adventure. Ironically when Carl finally does go adventuring...oh I'll shut up and let you watch it.
The Lost World shoutout[/b]- Not the Jurassic Park sequel, the book. I read that last year and immediately got what they were going for. Thankfully, no dinosaurs or apemen in this movie!
Things I didn't like- The characterization of the villains wasn't that great. I'm not saying Muntz actions didn't make sense. He was disgraced in the scientific community and that's got to hurt. But little things- like the dogs all being nasty guard dog breeds (Pit bull, bulldog, rottie)- except for Doug...who ends up helping the good guys *eyeroll*
Anti science message- Why is Muntz a bad guy? Because he wants to prove the existence of a previously unknown species of bird. Okay, he's pride driven too, but still. And it's implied that everyone else who wanted to capture Kevin was even more evil than him. Because, you know, whenever humans discover a new species, that species is ruined!
Things that made me go huh?- Munts has to be at a around 20 years older than Carl- who the literature addresses as 78. That is one spry 98 year old!
Dogs flying aircraft- Just...wtf.
Meh, I nitpick. The movie was great overall. There was one part in the movie where a kid in the movie started bawling- because of what had just happened in the movie. From all my experience, kids that age don't even pay attention to what's going on on film. the fact that the Pixar folks managed to reach that kid at that level...well that's quite a feat, isn't it?
And yes, you don't even have to ask- of course I was crying. Recommended.

I think the idea with Muntz was that he had gone insane at this point after obsessing over the bird for so long. Like in his earlier days of Charles Lindberghing around he probably wasn't such a bad guy. He was really a Heart of Darkness homage by the time we met him in the movie. And the reason Muntz capturing Kevin is such a bad thing is partly because of the fact that Kevin has newborn babies, that's the reason they're introduced. My problem with Muntz is that he wasn't as cool as he could have been. I thought he was pretty awesome, but he could really easily have been even more awesome. Although him setting the house on fire was a pretty FFFFF inducing good villain moment.
