I would rather be true to the race of the animated show, and besides, there are no African or Arabic people in Avatar either.

I'm pretty much done being upset/confused over the races of the different characters.
I'm just upset (as someone mentioned above) that they didn't get, specifically Katara's eye color right. I mean... wearing contacts isn't that hard. Katara's eyes don't have to be bright blue, but a blue tint would have been nice.
I am satisfied with the set. The set photos I've seen of the South Pole have been amazing. Plus it sounds like there is a lot of talent (or at least money) going into the editing and CGI effects of the movie, which is nice to hear.

China has deserts too and sand bending was a form of earth bending (which Toph eventually mastered). The whole Avatar mythology has buddhist elements which is enough of a tie to Indian culture in its own right.

Now, I've gone through a lot of this thread, but not all 30 pages, so forgive me if this has been brought up before... And I'm guessing we can speculate about future cast in this thread, right? Sense the Fire Nation's Middle Eastern/Indian now, whats gonna happen to Azula? Whose gonna play her? I really cant think of any female, Indian actors who can play her. There's the girl from Slumdog, but I doubt she'd pull off the evil Azula just cause she seems so nice. My guess is that they'll go with a Hispanic actor. Hispanic? What are you trying to imply??? That Hispanic people are generally evil and manicle!? Lol, j/k. No matter who they cast as Azul I bet people will be angry cause if she is another white actor people will say Azula ain't white and if they choose a different ethnicity people will say they demonizing all races except white. Lose lose situation. I think you meant maniacal, not "manicle". Sorry, spelling/grammar freak. It's funny how all of this hullabaloo could have been avoided if they'd actually stuck to an all-Asian cast. *laments* And as for the eye color thing: I'm not sure about you guys, but I've never thought eye color was that important. However, in the show they did sorta imply that eye color denotes bending abilities/nationality. So I'm not sure whether I really care about this or not. Not to put down those of you concerned about this, but I think the race issue is far more important than the eye color of the cast. Right now, we're sounding a tad nitpicky, which isn't what we want Paramount to think we are. It delegitimizes our argument a little. Once we have the right ethnicity, then we can all get angry about Zuko's scar and such.

No body in the series notices out of the place eye colors anyhow. How do you think Zuko and Iroh were able to be free in the Earth Kingdom for so long, or how the gAang weren't discovered in the Fire Nation. Heck, no one in the Boiling Rock noticed Sokka's out of place blue eyes and blue hairband!

I agree that the eye colors were not a big deal. Id still like to point out that there were other reasons why so many ships seem to have passed unseen in the night. The Earth Kingdom was in a state of war with noone wanting to draw attention to themselves or paying too much attention to strangers. The Gaang pretended to come from the colonies in the Fire Nation. Finally Sokka had his helmet on most of the time and during the line up, I think everyone was just too focused waiting on Chit Sang's response to pay attention. Its surprising how often people see what they want to see.

Um...the gAang said they were from 'the colonies', meaning they were most likely of mixed heritage...the same was probably also assumed of Zuko and Iroh.

I doubt anyone in the Earth Kingdom or Fire Nation would open embrace someone who is partially from another Nation, especially when the other nation is your sworn enemy. (Unless that is, they save your town from the military and Sokka gives a speech...) I don't think that members from the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom would commonly have, um, relations, with each other either, the world's gene pool seem pretty well contained inside each nation. I think forced reproduction or brothels are a little to R-rated for the Avaverse too. There's no evidence to support that any other people besides Aang and Katara ever got together outside of national boundaries. Even Kuruk and Roku, who traveled the world, still married inside national lines.

Looking at the characters, they do fit the description except for... WHITENESS! *facepalm*....how could they not atleast put some make-up on to make them look sorta-dark-ish. They look whiter than most white pale white people for god's sake! Aang being white, I had no problem with because he looked white to me. But Katara and Sokka, no, just no. I would be more appeased if they made the clothes the color of the Four Nations, like they did in the show... Although, to be practical, where are you going to get blue dye in the middle of no where? I highly doubt anyone would seriously complain about that if their clothes were colored by nation. Avatar isn't so realistic where blue clothes would break the suspension of disbelief.

I'm asian, and after watching Grand Torino a few weeks ago, I can see why the casting director maybe a wary of asian actors and actresses. The acting was just terrible!!
That being said, I still think there were probably prominent asian actors and actresses out there who could of filled the role. I just think casting directors were playing it safe, big name film, M.Night big break, beloved series....they're not taking any risk with new/young asian actors/actresses. And the with foreign actors/actress the problem is language. It's unfortunate, but that's hollywood.
But hey, I'm not complaining about the current actors and actresses. I only care about the acting and script. As long as that's good. I'm happy.

That's the irony of it: they thought they would be avoiding danger by straying away from an Asian/Inuit cast, but instead there's more negative press for the movie than there would have been if they'd just respected Avatar. I just read on the Racebending Livejournal that they're replacing the Chinese calligraphy of the show with a gibberish language. Looks like they're trying to completely de-Asianize the whole thing. :/
