I wish I remembered what I thought caused Zuko's scar before I found out that it was Ozai..... I don't remember obsessing over what it was, so maybe I just accepted it for some reason. Aang running away was really interesting too. I always forget that Aang feels so guilty about his people dying and it's an important thing.

So...WHY did Ozai scar him?
1) Because he spoke out against letting innocent soldiers die?
2) Because he refused to fight his own father?
3) Because Ozai's a sadistic SOB and thought scarring his 13-year-old son for life would be fun?
4) All of the above

Well Ozai never supported Zuko and was disappointed with him, so I think he wanted to show everyone that he wasn't weak like he thought Zuko was. The first two you listed nandi probably justified his reason for doing it, but 3 would be the main reason IMO.

I believe it's all of the above. I wonder of scarring someone like that is common practice in the Fire Nation. I mean, no one but Iroh seemed appalled or upset. Seems like it was within Ozai's rights or was part of their accepted cultural practices. That doesn't mean it isn't horrible and sadistic and cruel. Going for Zuko's face makes the act just that much more cruel. Ozai could have burned his chest or shoulder or arm but he made sure it the scar would be where everyone could see it all the time forevermore. I suppose that was Ozai's point. So Zuko was more than willint to fight the old general(because he thought he could win) but would not fight his own father. Do you think that's because he knew he wouldn't win and sort of wimped out, or do you think it's because he truly didn't want to fight his father because he loved and respected him(Typing those words makes me sad). He must have known that backing out of an Agni Kai had consequences. Did he feel his father wouldn't exact that punishment on his own son?
The Storm is a fascinating episode and I wish we knew about the traditions and practices of the Fire Nation.

I think Zuko respected his dad too much. Asian cultures really honour their ancestors...to actually attack one must be kinda taboo...
And I think it's kind of expected to burn the loser at the end of an Agni Kai. Zhao was kind of ticked when Zuko DIDN'T scar him.

Yet, Zuko constantly disrespected Iroh for the first 2 seasons. Though, of course, everything had changed for Zuko by then. He was embittered and depressed and despairing and took that out on pretty well everyone.
Iroh was pleased that Zuko didn't burn Zhao though, wasn't he? He told Zuko that he had shown honour while Zhao had not. Zhao is a pretty hard core Fire Nation tradionalist, I suppose while Iroh is more willing to bend and see things with a different perspective.

Ozai instantly turned Zuko into an arse...Iroh slowly turned him back

That's a quick summation of things, lol. But Zuko turned himself around with some help from Iroh.
Ozai: the man with the power to make people asses.

I finally (after years of trying) got my brother into Avatar...and he loves it!!! (he's 23 by the way and I'm 20) We just finished "The Blue Spirit" and he said that it was his favorite episode thus far. He loved that the Blue Spirit was none other than Zuko. I have to agree to what has been said before in this thread, I would have to say that in a way. The Storm and The Blue Spirit is a two part episode. With the whole Sokka and Katara getting sick from being in the crappy weather that WAS "The Storm" And that is what I have to say about that

These episodes are freaking awesome. I'm picturing Aang seeing the mask slip off Zuko's face and it was such a moment. I always used to get confused over what episode came first and now I can finally put it together that Katara and Sokka are sick in Blue Spirit because of The Storm. It's probably taken me way too long to make that connection.
