I've been thinking this for a while but never really posted about it.
In Season 1 traveling everywhere seemed slow, but in Season 3 why can they just fly anywhere in 4.6 seconds? This mostly came into mind for me in TSR b/c they go to all these places trying to fine (ahaha I meant find! YES they wanted to FINE him...lol) the man that killed Kya. & they find him on Whail Tail Island.
How did they just go almost anywhere in ONE episode?

I think the reason they were making such a big deal about Whale Tail Island is because they didn't have Appa for transportation. In TSR, they did, making the trip faster. I agree that they put a big emphasis on flying while in book I. It seemed like it took several days to get to Kyoshi Island, but, as previously stated, onlya few hours to get back to almost where they started.

but they did not go to Whail Tail Island, and the reason why i think that it took a shorter time to get places in the book 3 is becase they are in the fire nation and things are closer together not on the other side of the world like north pole and south pole. make sence?

^Yeah but it took them several weeks to get from Ba Sing Se to the Fire Nation in between seasons but it the finale it only took a day. But I see why getting fromt the Fire Nation to the Earth Kingdom is faster than getting from one pole to the other.

Well I don't know how well is the size of fire nation is because to me in the first half of the season three, they travel slow...and that was mostly because they keep making stops.
Also note...that most people don't pay attention to the background...I mean when they went to the first and second ship, it was night to early morning and then when they found the guy is was in the afternoon and katara forgive Zuko in the evening hours.
So The Southern Raiders was like an episode of the show 24.

well ... if they showed all of the flying they did then it would QUICLY become the world's longest, most boring series ... but i get what you mean about how flying took so long at the beginning and not so long at the end
well ... in the first season they didn't quite have the sense of urgency they had at the very end .... and (as shown by Zuko's map in episode 3) they weren't exactly going in a straight line ... in the second season it took them forever to get to Ba Sing Se because they kept stopping so Aang could master Waterbending and Earth Bending ... which was mostly off screen ... and then there was the whole Appa went missing thing
in Book 3 (before all the Gaang+Zuko adventures) they were trying to be stealthy .... in TSL (and the other Zuko adventures) they always went in a straight line to their destination... with only 2 people and the small amount of provisions they would need ... and in TSL (what a lot of people forget) they didn't draw a straight line on the Avatar Map we've all seen in the opening of every episode .... it's a GLOBE they went southwest (which would cut the distance to about a third of the straight line most people draw)
and i'm betting that it actualy did take at least a couple days to fly there ... but it would be pointless to show that because there was no action or development during that time
