Well I have not seen the end of the series yet unfortunately, however I more or less know the ending from blabbermouth Friends, spoilers slipped in other forums....
Having to deal with the end of one of my favorite series I started to look over various parts of the different countries and looked at their movements and actions...
So I will try to predict the out come of what would happen even if the avatar was to fail early on, or to not even participate in the first place.
In doing so I theorized one thing about the fire nation. They were doomed to fail since the very beginning.
From insane rulers to insane political and inner turmoil the fire nations prospects seem grim even without the messiah known as the avatar...
The fire nation had committed unspeakable acts of violence... torture, imprisonment, genocide... They made enemies of the world.
The war front was spread all over the world... from the vast land of the earth nation, or the perilous waters of the water tribes, troops would need various advantages to gain victories.
Which they had of course, superior strategies and tactics, superior technology, and for a time superior generals.
However those advantages would not last long considering the battles they were fighting...
As the fire nation would conquer more and more land they would of course need troops to defend it. To defend an area would require leaving behind troops to defend and maintain an area. Keeping the peasants in line, and ensuring the land is usable for their country.
If they used the conquered people as a militia of sorts, all sorts of problems would ensue. The more spirited would rebel, the sullen and defeated would not be an effective labor source let alone soldiers. Canon fodder at most.
They cant use too many people from the homeland for soldiers, someone has to man the farms, and someone must remain to bear children.
Lines would be spread thin, distance would effect resupply and Intel. Pride and moral would wear off after lengthy fighting and brutal warfare. Trauma and wounded would slow down the army, and provided that not all of the fire nation military is as evil as depicted, the brass would not simply abandon them.
Provided that the fire nation does take over the world as it seemed they would, their reign would not last long after the comet would pass. Again extreme distance would take effect.
The first and foremost weakness would be the successor of the fire nation, who would seem to be Azula. I suspect as many probably do, the day Azula takes the throne is the day everyone burns and the land will erupt into pestilence. She is very effective at war, but peacetime leaves me with many doubts....
Fire nation officers seem very, very ambitious... If some of the more successful leaders are awarded land in the newly acquired areas... Some might have more grandiose ideas than a lifetime serving the fire lord, maybe a new country or two will be formed? The fact the soldiers are spread thin would also mean any resistance movements could also be rampant across the empire... There is just so many factors that could have lead the the fire nations downfall...
What are your thoughts on this matter?
