The creators said that Aang is the last airbender. They are dead.

During the finale, Aang bent "the energy inside" Ozai to take away his firebending. I theorize that Aang can and will use this power to grant to non-benders the ability to airbend. Possibly starting with Teo and the other Northern Air Temple glider-users. The creators of the show have stated that although Aang is the last air nomad, he need not strictly be the last airbender; his children might possess airbending. Spiritbending provides a convenient and satisfying way for the writers to have Aang to restore airbenders back into the world, without having to wait for him to father lots of children. One wacky corollary theory I thought of is this: Aang took away Ozai's firebending, but in the process inadvertently gave him airbending. Ozai doesn't know how to use airbending... yet. But he can return as a villain! I do not think of this as a likely theory, just a fun one. Thoughts? Have the creators said that he is the last air nomad or last airbender. You just made me realize- It's possible that there are other air nomads tha carry the airbending gene but aren't airbenders themselves. If this is true, the creators sre tricked us with their wording.

Hmm... maybe Aang and katara have kids and who ever isnt a bender should still have some kind of airbender gene, right? If he could use spirit bending to give his kids who dont have airbending, airbending. OR, he could give katara airbending, nah she wouldnt get the genes, would she? this is all so confusing. Speaking of genes, the Air Nomads were NOMADS, they roamed across the world all over, who is to say there isn't some Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Water Tribe citizens with Air Nomad genes because at least one of their distant relatives were Air Nomads During the finale, Aang bent "the energy inside" Ozai to take away his firebending. I theorize that Aang can and will use this power to grant to non-benders the ability to airbend. Possibly starting with Teo and the other Northern Air Temple glider-users. I remember reading that Bending has nothing to do with genetics, though... Remember those twins in The Fortuneteller? One was an Earthbender and one wasn't.

Just throwing this out there but i read that air nomads who had no association with a temple roamed the world individually or in groups. If Sozin only destroyed the temples what about the wanderers? Did they hunt all of them down too? Also the same source states that all air nomads were born with bending abilities. but the chances of a small group surviving for 100 years while hiding from the fire nation seems pretty slim.

Exactly what I was thinking metacree, The Airnomads roamed the world, it would have been kind of weird for them to qall be at the temples would it not? And they were known for their evasivness two? Couldn't they have flown off and be hiding somwhere. I don't think the world will ever be balanced without the Airnomads... I'm wondering how well Mike & Brian thought this through...

If there were airnomads that survived i would guess that they would have to adapt with what ever nation they were hiding in. And if they continued on their lineage with the locals the offspring would have links to the airbenders. So maybe if aang taught them or used spiritbending........ but i don't see why they couldn't have secretly passed down the art to other generations. and i don't know what would result if airbenders would breed with other benders or just regular people from other nations since all airnomads are born benders. I'm just kinda rambling now there are just too many what ifs.................

I definitely agree that, logically, a few air nomads would probably be here and there... but there's just no evidence for it in canon. The best chance for them is repopulation, imo.

I think Aang could poll this off himself, I mean Kyoshi lived for 230 years! If in all that time Aang tried to restore the Air Nomad population he could get pretty far. (Lucky For Aang ). The only problem is that after Aang is done there the Air Nomads have to um, *Breed* with there own relatives, Which May Cause Alzheimer's I believe. And finally, I believe it would take like 20 or 23 men to get every woman in the world Impregnated. ~Dizzy~

Its possible that the airbenders survived, in season 3, "The Firebending Masters" they survived hundreds of years in secrecy

^But they weren't targeted to be killed-on-sight.
They were, in my opinion, just ignored.

^But they weren't targeted to be killed-on-sight. They were, in my opinion, just ignored. True, they weren't targeted, yet, if someone noticed them wouldn't they have spread the word? Such a civilization isn't just kept to one's self if witnessed, let alone a civilization that has been thought to have been extinct. Also, it is the Avatar's duty to restore balance to the world, so he isn't quite done yet. I believe there's a lot of things that can be done to bring Airbenders back. I don't really support the LOL ENERGYBEND, HAAAAAAAAAA! theory, but seeing as they were wanderers by definition, they could have survived.
