During the finale, Aang bent "the energy inside" Ozai to take away his firebending. I theorize that Aang can and will use this power to grant to non-benders the ability to airbend. Possibly starting with Teo and the other Northern Air Temple glider-users.
The creators of the show have stated that although Aang is the last air nomad, he need not strictly be the last airbender; his children might possess airbending. Spiritbending provides a convenient and satisfying way for the writers to have Aang to restore airbenders back into the world, without having to wait for him to father lots of children.
One wacky corollary theory I thought of is this: Aang took away Ozai's firebending, but in the process inadvertently gave him airbending. Ozai doesn't know how to use airbending... yet. But he can return as a villain! I do not think of this as a likely theory, just a fun one.
Thoughts?

Sounds good, but I doubt that Aang replaced Fire with Air. I think that would have changed Ozais "spirit" too much, as Air is the element of freedom and peace...

Maybe Aang will live as long if not longer than Kiyoshi and pull it off all on his own.

I think that airbenders can come back, but it will take hundreds of years before there are a lot of them in the world.
M&B said that the air nomads wouldn't come back, but they were probably refering to the idea of other airbenders being alive currently and of the old culture. Even when there are more airbenders alive, the old ways will be near forgotten.

I like the thought that Aang could give people the power to bend and with spiritbending introduced it certainly seems like the perfect way to restore the balance. The airnomad culture is lost forever but maybe there will be small populations of airbenders living throughout the other nations

Long ago the four nations lived together in harmony..." As epic as kataang can be, no. it couldnt work that way. Genetics is complicated, in order for the airbenders to be returned through genetics, aang would have to be a super pimp. distanthorizons.proboards31.com/index.cgi?board=trash&action=display&thread=6327 ;D

^It was more of the Air Nomads were spiritual beings and they had the smallest population which made the number of benders 100%.

lol, that is a fun theory with Ozai becoming an airbender, I would greatly enjoy that Xb ^It was more of the Air Nomads were spiritual beings and they had the smallest population which made the number of benders 100%. What? Who said they had the smallest population?

Wow, thats odd, I always figured the Water Tribes had the least, there is much less landmass claimed by the Water Tribes versus the Air Nomads if you put the land masses together, and the Air Nomads didn't even always use their landmasses

Hmm... maybe Aang and katara have kids and who ever isnt a bender should still have some kind of airbender gene, right? If he could use spirit bending to give his kids who dont have airbending, airbending. OR, he could give katara airbending, nah she wouldnt get the genes, would she? this is all so confusing.

It bears noting that bending is partly genetic, but also partly spiritual. See, for example, the identical twins in "The Fortuneteller;" one is an earthbender, the other isn't. I also hear tell that the creators said that any children of Katara and Aang could be waterbenders, could be airbenders, or could be nonbenders.
