A year and a half ago, I said that firebenders should be able to use their bending to propel themselves into the air. I got a lot of negative feedback. But actually, this isn't a bragging thread. It's still an open discussion. Some of you guys had reasons as to why flying firebenders couldn't fly. Care to mention them again?

Well, just because it's canon doesn't mean it hasn't gotten a lot of negative feedback from the fans . . .
No offense or anything, but the idea seems too cheesy for M&B to use, IMO.

It kinda bothered me that she could fly. It's just like, flying should just be for airbenders. It seemed like too much. :/

Yeah, not even Aang can fly without his glider (as far as we know)... it just seems sort of out of character for firebending, if that makes any sense.

If you observe carefully, Azula didn't exactly "fly". She managed to propel herself in a straight line basically until she could get to something to grab on to. The firebending can propel her, but it isn't precise enough to truly fly the way Aang does with his glider. It's good for short bursts of movement in one direction, and nothing more...

You know, you might have said that you didn't make this to brag, but that note near the end says otherwise. She can propel herself into the air, and she can propel herself. As I remember from your previous discussion, flying was brought up. Most of us rejected the notion of firbending to fly (unless its heating a hot air balloon) Considering how rare it was seen, it must take a high level of concentration and energy for a firebnder to actually move himself/herself with the burst of the flame. Azula doesn't "fly" she "jumps" just about as high as Ty Lee. And yea, the idea was kind of lame.

Maybe one reason why people are aversive to the idea of Azula "flying" with firebending is because it's too similar to shows or anime that feature characters with innate superpowers that can for instance, fly. One of the things about bending that attracted me so much is because they're based on actual physical explanations from bending technique and such (and real life martial arts!), and that's what makes bending so believable. Aang can fly not just because he's got some mysterious superman power, but because he controls the air currents around his glider with airbending. Azula shooting flame jets out of her feet to propel herself seem too far removed from the style of Kung Fu that firebending is based.

In TSR she just used it to push her self sideways while falling downwards. She could never fly in sustained flight that would be stupid (I wish proboards would hurry up and fix)

From the last part of sozin's comet, you could see that ozai was flying around like crazy, and I agree with most of you, flying firebenders was kind of too much.

^I think they only were able to stay up in the air for as long as they did because the comet boosted their powers.

No, Ozai was flying with real skill to avoid an avatar in the avatar state for that long. Skill like that would seem you would have to master, or risk going splat. He definitely trained for years and without the comet.

^Still, Jeong Jeong didn't fly before to take down Zhao's troops.
I'm sure he trained in propulsion, but that doesn't mean he can do it anytime he wants. He has to be completely powered.

I mentioned it in the Sozin's Comet thread...
I too think it was the comet's boost that allowed them to do it...it would give them a heck of an advantage to rain down fire from above...we would have seen a lot more of it if it was a more commonplace form.

I have to agree with Franky here. He had total control and was whizzing around. If it had been a first like that, he'd not been so graceful and quick. I'm sure the comet helped, but I don't think it had that much to do with it. He was flying for Pete's sake!!! He even had his arms up like Superman!!
It was just a little too much for me sorry, I thought it was lame!
