I take it that you all heard about the 17 year old who got decapitated at a Georgia Six Flags Theme Park a few days ago, if not, here's a video link:
It has been recently added that the teen was actually trying to find a shortcut to get onto the ride.
Either way, it was pretty foolish of him.
Let me start by saying that it sucks that another kid (out of another 100,000,000 who are dead/dying at this moment) had his life taken away, having his whole life ahead of him (no pun intended) and I have the deepest sympathy for his friends and family.
Now that that is out of the way, it's time to mildly bash this kids foolish decision.
I've been reading a lot of comments about how you are insensitive for calling this kid stupid and that you should have respect for life and all that. Well, get this: This kid pretty much made himself the teen moron for the month of June this year.
Stupid is exactly this:
First off, whether he was trying to cut the line quicker or was trying to get a hat back, either motive was pretty d@mn stupid if you ask me. Secondly, the meaning of "fence" comes into play. Fences are used to separate one from a place that they ought not to venture. Add TWO six foot fences and that pretty much signifies that you d@mn well shouldn't be hopping the first fence. Then there are signs. More than half of the signs that you see on a day-to-day basis are basically telling you, "if you disregard this you WILL die."
So you add two six foot fences and a slew of signs that tell you to keep away - around a roller coaster - that pretty much sends the message that bad things will happen if you cross this line. And that exactly happened when the kid got his head (torn?)(sliced?) removed.
And yet, I heard rumors that the parents are trying to sue Six Flags. I'm going to say it flat: I have respect for lives that are lost only if they themselves had a respect for life - and this kid clearly didn't have it since he disregarded all precautions that were there in order to save his life. In this case, I have sympathy for the parents of this kid: they lost a child in the most unimaginable way and it must be killing them. But, this doesn't mean that sueing the park will give them any security. For one thing, money really doesn't change anything in this situation, and for another thing, it's not the park's fault. They took all neccesary steps in order to avoid an event such as this, and this kid was dumb enough to not listen. Face it: your child died a horrific (but hopefully on his part, painless) death out of his own foolishness. Come to terms that the park is sorry for your lose, but they warn everybody not do anything like this and that even if you do sue and win a cash settlement, that won't bring him back.
This is just a lesson that the endangerment of common sense will lead to the extinction of humanity.
So what do you think?
