Loved the guy. If you read about his past on the nick.com website it makes him seem like a bigger bad ***.
Unfortunatly he only had like 2 days to train Sokka. So Sokka didn't pick up much technique just principles of the the swordsman art and methods of how a swordsman improves himself. Personally I think his training methods were good considering the time constraint he had.
Also does anyone know what sword art Piandao used. By the elegence as well as the usage of dual edge swords as oppose to a single edge sword I would say its definitly not that of Kendo/Samurai. My guess that the sword style derivies itself from Chinese descent if I had to guess it would be Tai Chi, but usually a Tai Chi sword fighter uses a thinner sword.

When I first saw the sword in the shop, the first thing I thought of was the Green Destiny from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The style is similar, but the blade on the Green Destiny was much much thinner. I could have sworn I've seen another character on the show with a similar sword... Green Destiny replica

Tai Chi doesn't usually uses sword. Its more of Wushu style. I've seen it many times and when he demonstrates to Sokka, The one where he balanced on one leg pointing out his Sword, Its a Wushu stance. But, the thing is, his weapon isn't a Dao. Daos are curved at the end, And are the Wushu's main swords. Piandao's sword is more like a Roman Gladius than a Chinese-sword though. Its parallel-y pointed at the end. Chinese-swords are curved, for slashing.

Sokka uses a jian. It's best for piercing through things thatn slashes which daos are good at. Jian usually kill by stabbing in between the ribs.

Well Tai Chi does have a sword form as seen by this video youtube.com/watch?v=XQGvm-7WYFY(hopefully you guys don't mind the corny music) I think it looks very similar given the hand gestures as well as the foot work Piandao used. But I could be wrong.

This 100-soldiers-vs-a-great-master-battle reminds me of a chinese legend or something... I think it was in a movie... Uuhm.... It reminds me of Heroes when Takezo Kensei has to retrieve the fire scroll from the 90 angry ronin. Except for you know, the fact that Kensei has the power of spontaneous regeneration and Piandao battles 100 solders and can't just heal himself. His backstory makes him seem even more bad@$$. Poor Piandao he was given up by his parents. What jerks. I love how he's a member of the White Lotus Society. It just makes him 10x more awsome.

Well knowing his background does help explaining why he trained Sokka the way he did.
Piando wasn't trying to teach Sokka a style but rather make Sokka focus on his innate talents. This way Sokka's limitless imagination and genius will develop a style that's wholey his own. Keep in mind that Piando developed his own style derived from what he was 'taught'. Also, he was praising Sokka for using more unconventional movements and strats rather trying to fight him head on.
Typical Jian styled sword arts are more akin to fencing than anything else. The thought is to avoid or parry strike while counter thrusting at openings.
As a whole most of actual jian swords that are used in wushu contest are nothing more than tin foil blades with handles so they "snap" more when thrusted to make noise. As it was mentioned "practical" jian blades are stiffer and used for primarily stabbing motions.

I have to comment on how awesome Piandao was in the battle in Sozin's Comet. I loved how he went surfing over the wall with Pakku. He fought as well as any of the OWL benders. He totally repp'd it for the non-benders. Go Piandao!
