Since DVD content is allowed now, I'd like to share a few opinions and theories I have on the Boiling Rock.
While I was rewatching it today with my friend, I noticed something strange. When Sokka is rescuing Suki inside her cell while Zuko stands guard outside, another guard comes by and needs to get into Suki's cell. It occured to me that there had to have been a specific reason for the guard to have those orders. I'm wondering who they came from; could it possibly be Azula?
And before you go away, it's not just the crazy Azuki shipper in me! I'm using logic as well. Azula shows up at the prison the next day, but there is no specific reason why she was there. It seems unlikely that Mai would tell Azula, who she fears and distrusts, that Zuko was being held as a prisoner at the Boiling Rock.
And when Azula comes to see the warden, she looks at the man he has captive and says, "No, that's not one of them." By "one of them," could she have been refering to the gaang? But what I'm wondering is, if the prison security was so tight, how information of the escape attempt could have possibly gotten to Azula. Unless Azula had anticipated a rescue attempt, which is possible.
In DoBS, Azula said that Suki "used to talk about Sokka all the time," which suggested that Azula had spent a significant amount of time with Suki while she was in prison. I just find it odd that Azula would spend so much time with a specific prisoner, her "favorite prisoner" as she referred to her. I'm wondering if Azula's original reason for going to the prison was to spend more time with Suki, which could have been why the order was given to take Suki out of her cell. However, when Azula discovered that there had been an escape attempt she forgot about this and thought it was an opportunity to try and capture one of the gaang.
And at the end of the Boiling Rock, if you look closely at Azula's hand formation as she confronts Mai, you'll notice that it is the same formation she uses when she creates lightning. From what I could see, Azula had every intention of killing Mai right then and there. A blow like the one she was about to give could not have been solely intended to harm Mai.
And seeing how quickly Azula is ready to dispose of her friends, it makes me wonder about things she could have done in the past. Yes, I still believe that Azula killed Ursa while she was leaving after her banishment. The knife in Zuko alone is the biggest hint, but the scenes in the trailer of crazy Azula seeing her mother's reflection in the mirror could also be signs that her mind is tormented. I don't think Azula can feel guilt, but now that she has absolutely no one to turn to save her father, I think it's reasonable to assume that she is going to lose her mind.
