SourceYes, it's a wiki source, but all the others were in Dutch, so went and got it in English. Recently there have been a lot of problems with Death Note. Students have been suspended from school because they have made their own Death Note books, some even went to court. There was also one murder case in Belgium where the thighs of an adult male were laying on the ground and there was a note that said " Watashi wa Kira dess." (Or a misspelling of "I am Kira." Also, the Chinese have banned Death Note because of all the killing and violence. My OpinionPersonally, I really don't see any reason for the manga to be banned. It is fiction. People can't understand that apparently. The Manga Murder is just another serial killer case. Just because it relates to that particular manga doesn't mean it should be banned. How many serial killer novels come out each year? How many do you see in the murder/mystery section of your favorite bookstore? Why is this different? Because it's drawn? Students are getting in trouble for having Death Note notebooks. They can't kill anybody with a notebook! (Hence, fiction!) I just don't see the point in treating this like a murder fiasco. It's just proof of how the world is too afraid nowadays. People who haven't even read the manga or seen the anime are saying "It's demonic. The manga promotes murder." No. It doesn't. It's a horror manga. It's a good read, and, if you read to the end, you can know that it very well doesn't promote murder. Actually, by the end of the first volume, you know Light's a bad guy. Just because the story follows the bad guy doesn't mean it makes his deeds right. I don't know. I just find this entire thing ridiculous. What do you guys think?

Well, I get your point definately, but...
You gotta remember, people are pretty stupid nowadays.
Yeah, I know. The Death Note isn't real so you can't really kill anybody with it by scribbling down names in the book. I think the problem is with that is that students will metaphorically use it; that is, they may write down the names of people whom they wished death upon anyway, and that enough is disturbing.

Exactly. It's like when kids make "hit lists", not ever intending on getting back at this people, but who probably could. The Manga Murder is just another serial killer case. Just because it relates to that particular manga doesn't mean it should be banned. How many serial killer novels come out each year? How many do you see in the murder/mystery section of your favorite bookstore? Why is this different? Because it's drawn? When's the last time a serial killer case has been a reenactment, or dedicated to a particular serial killer novel? It's giving people a scare; I kind of understand especially considering that it's China. I mean, they cut out scenes in movies that make Chinese people look bad (PotC 3), so a manga that inspired a murder may inspire them to ban it like the many other things China has banned in the past.

Wow, and I thought the U.S. was bad. I quite hate myself for it, but whenever I watch a drama, I get so wrapped up in the show I often make comments and act like I'm part of the show. I guess I'm a little obsessive. ^^;;

Wait a minute..... The Asian people in POTC3 were from Singapore, weren't they? (not the actors, the characters) I heard that in China, deviantART and such sites are banned just because they have pro-Taiwan art.

Yeah, they're from Singapore, but they're still Chinese. That part of the movie is missing in Taiwan too (but I don't know about SINGAPORE though). Someone I met once said you don't really notice the different, but for me, it's just the fact that they took it out >.>
And I dunno about deviantART and such but I wouldn't be surprised, but just for pro-Taiwan reasons? ehh.
IMO, I think Asia is just not as laid back as elsewhere in general. Zoolander is banned in Malaysia and Singapore because of the attempted assassination of the "Malaysian prime minister" plot. heh.
*sigh* I think I could imagine my Death Note obsessed cousin making a Death Note notebook for fun...she probably never would just because she lacks the initiative or whatever the word is though. heh

i don't want to get off topic, but what does POTC stand for again?
Yeah the Chinese are really strick on censoring stuff. They can put in all of the martial arts violence that they want, and perhaps a little sensuality, but lord forbid, they won't put in anything that may contain: -History of the treatment of Chinese during the Japanese occupation -Stuff that disses communism -Really brutal violence -Heavy sexuality
But I know they do half of that because China doesn't have a rating system. But the top two- *shakes head*.
I think pretty much the entire Asian continent is like that. They cut or ban movies that either make them look bad, bring up bad/painful history, or may bring an upheavel because the movie talks about their government in a bad way. They do this in several Middle Eastern countries; they ban movies that has a lot of sexuality and bad stuff in general, which is immoral to Islam, which is considered a disgrace to their goverment (theocracies, remember?).
Japan does that a lot too. Well, not so much on the sex part, but on the history part. They don't show stuff that concerns them and WWII a lot; I think they just now started putting their involvment in WWII back in the school textbooks (I think). They also fuel trouble between Korea and China when they do that, because of the three countries long and complicated history with each other...
Germany did that once too, but they do now.
This sort of thing makes me remember how much stuff America can do in the movie industry, but dumb interest groups won't let writers do anything!
But that's a different story.
Yeah. I suppose media that was linked to a serial killing or what not is going to be banned in another country to prevent a mass hysteria.

Yeah, but I guess while you're there (I've visited Malaysia/Singapore before), it DOESN'T feel very different w/ the censoring and such.

not surprising in the least, they've been on a bender to slow the japanese culture being imported to the mainland (they've forced several jap animes to bad time slots so domestically created shows have better air times).. This just gave them a reason to ban the show. China is huge on outlawing anything they consider "deviant" behavior. They recently forced a 3 day mourning period on the whole country for the earthquake and doing anything "entertaining" was to be suspended. www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18724
