Free like a butterfly instead of a flying boar... butterflies are prettier anyway.

I was curious to know why a river spirit would be called the Painted Lady (aside from her makeup) but that doesn't bring to mind a woman in a painting or something. But I checked dictionary.com and these are painted's meanings: 1. reproduced or represented in paint: a painted image. 2. covered with a coating of paint: a painted chair. 3. unreal; artificial; feigned: a painted life. 4. exaggerated or misrepresented: a luridly painted version of what really happened. 5. covered with makeup, esp. to excess. 6. brightly colored or multicolored (used in combinations). I was browsing Google when I discovered: The Painted Lady is also the name of a butterfly a.k.a. Thistle Butterfly because the caterpillars eat thistles. The thistle's meaning is: Aphrodite presented Phaon with a thistle, this is seen as her way of ensnaring him on the prickles
In fairy tales, the thistle often symbolizeds an enduring love, that will last in spite of pain and suffering
Scottish heraldry proclaims that an invading Viking trod upon a thistle, and alerted the Scots to his presence. The Order of the Thistle motto - nemo me impune lacessit roughly translates to "no one attacks me and gets away with it"It's a long stretch for symbolism but make of it what you will. I don't see the resemblance but maybe you can.
