Nice. Karma to you. It could have be written in Mandarin for that extra touch. An4 he2 Tou4 Fu2 (Aang and Toph) The numbers denoting the pitch and tone of pronounciation. Incidently, the pronounciation of the Fong character in Bei Fong, in actual Mandarin is Fang1 That's pretty interesting, though when I try to pronounce it, it sounds more like Dory's whale talk XD but all the same, that last bit about the Bei Fong's is pretty neat. Oh, look guys, more Taang art !

Oh, look guys, more Taang art !Guess it only sounds right to Mandarin speakers like myself. Oddly though, while the Avatar world itself uses Basic Mandarin characters as the main language...only Aang and Toph's names seem Chinese in origin. Aang's name is only one character meaning peace or calm. Typical of a monk's name as by taking the tonsure, the monk has renounced all worldy attachments. Toph's is four characters long. Chinese names range from two (one family, one given) to four characters long (two family and two given). Three being the most common world wide in our world. Name's with four characters are generally less common. Fire Nation names sound Japanese to me but we have yet to encounter any family names. Zuko's sounds most Japanese to me. Azula's being a phonetic deriviation of Ashura in accordance to her evil nature. Funny how Mai's name (Another Japanese looking name) is spelled M-A-I, leading one to believe it's pronounced MAH-AI but instead it's pronounced MAY which would have been written in english as Mei. Funnily, her name sounds like a Mandarin character used to describe bad luck. Or depending on pronounciation pitch, it could be the character meaning 'Pretty'. Ty Lee's name sounds Chinese and could be of the two character variety unless she has a family name we don't know about. Phonetically, her name is pronounced TAI-LEE but in Mandarin it would be Da4-Lee4 (Big/Great Strength) the same characters as the Dai Lee. But I think the pronounciation for the Dai Lee is derived from the Cantonese dialect. Suki's name is phonetically the same as the Japanese word for 'Like' as in 'I Like You'. But is written as two Mandarin characters. Sokka and Katara's names are complete mysteries to me. They're written as 2 and 3 characters respectively but with no family names, ie directly translation phonetically, and I cannot determine what cultural basis they used. Do they sound Native Eskimo to you? Ursa's name is very Russian. Meaning 'Bear' I wonder if there's a Mandarin dub of the show... Nice art find Kai. The first and last ones are new to me. The second one's been around for quite sometime.

LOL. marvel, when I take linguistics, I'll ask my teacher if I can reference that for extra credit XD
It's so awesome that only Toph and Aang's names are Chinese, and everyone else is, whatever they are ^^
And I'm pretty sure that Azula's name comes from the spanish word "azul" which means blue, because she bends blue fire.
There is a thread around here somewhere which had the meaning of all the character's names listed. I'll have to see if I can find it, I'm 99.9% positive that they had Sokka and Katara's, though I can't remember what they meant.
Really? I never saw the second one until now, but that's probably just me. XD

I never saw the second one until now, but that's probably just me. XD All the cast members have their names written in Mandarin and mean something. I'm just saying that only Aang's and Toph's seem Chinese in origin. Because I am sure I've never heard of a Chinese dude named Sokka or any Chinese girl going by Katara. Zuko's name sounds Japanese only when pronounced in English. When you say his name in Mandarin it sounds kinda the same but different. If Zuko's name was derived from Japan it'd be even funnier as the -ko suffix for given names are usually for GIRLS. If the -ko was in his family name it wouldn't be as awkward. In Mandarin it most definately does not sound feminine. If you were to pronounce his Mandarin characters, Kanji in Japan, in Japanese, it would sound, obviously, different. That said, Maiko sounds like a name for a girl. Kataang sounds like a sound effect of a gong or something with metallic impact. Tokka reminds me of the mutant snapping turtle from Ninja Turtles (Spelled the same too) Zutara sounds like a sci-fi sound effect. Zu (laser) Tara (I have no idea, warp speed?) Sokkla sounds like some fancy coffee or chocolate drink. Taang suffers the same as Kataang: A metallic sound effect. Mai and Sokka sound like something you get from Starbucks. Mokka! Will that be cream or sugar? Bottomline? Due to the 'normal' nature of her name anything with Mai's name sounds sensible. Odd but true.

Mokka sounds cool! (And yummy.)
Taang reminds me of juice every time I read/hear it.
Now Tokka is just as fancy as Tokko, like genders or something.
Oh wow, this is just weird... but fun. hah.

Hmmm apparently we have character limits now. Did we always have that? Darn, long posts will be chopped up. Marvel: Katara's name is a deviation of the Latin word for waterfall which are catadupa or cataracta. I'm guessing they took it from the last word. I hope that helps. ^_^ And Kaibasgirl: Azula's name was speculated that it could have came from either azul (blue in Spanish) for the blue flames she does; or asura because let's face it, our princess can be a demon (or is a demon, depends on your POV). So take a pick really. ^_^ Why that's lovely. As a Sokklan myself, I'm happy to hear that....hmm plot bunnies. XDDD Yay for Sokkla. And of course, it doesn't need to be said, hooray Taang. ^_^ Oh and I found something cute:

Karma for the manip find...though it'd be so much more satisfying to see the day that would happen without fan alterations.
But...cest la vie.

Okay, marvel, I understand if you don't think your fics are all that great, but for those of us who do think they're awesome, and enjoy reading them, KNOCK IT OFF! Thank you. Anyway, did anyone ever read something or come across a line or sentence that just totally made you think of Taang? Cause sometimes when I read those fortunes in the fortune cookies, some of them sound so much like what Taang represents XD

Ahhh, I've seen that icon somewhere before but it's still a beautiful sight to look at. *karmas Maylene* I quietly second that. ^A couple of excerpts from Philosophy in Literature class had me think of Taang. and those were my favorite parts because of that. >> Do you remember what any of them said? <333

Okay, marvel, I understand if you don't think your fics are all that great, but for those of us who do think they're awesome, and enjoy reading them, KNOCK IT OFF! Yes'm. I'll stop with the 'Tortured Artist' bit. But seriously, Thanks for telling me to put them up at FF.net. I must say the response was...a little surprising. I've got reviewers saying that even though they don't like Taang or that they support Tokka, they're willing to keep an open mind for the stories. I have never embraced the concept of the fortune cookie. I see no point in a cookie I cannot eat. That and because we don't have them here. Despite the majority of the population being Chinese. We don't need idioms from cookies, that's what our grandparents are for. But please, do share what you've read. Located fanart: riakitsuneyoukai.deviantart.com/art/Dreamlike-82871287I like Aang's outfit, seems a mix of Air and Fire fashions.

No problem, what are friends for? ^^ Well, this is the part where I'd probably point and say, "I TOLD YOU SO!!" except that I didn't, LOL. I only said people would adore them, which came true, but I'm so glad that non-Taang shippers are finally seeing the beauty of this ship. This is absolutely fantastic, I'm so happy! ^^ lakjflajawhat?! Are you serious?! You've NEVER had a single fortune cookie in your entire life?! But...but...what's the point of going to a Chinese restaurant, if you can't get free fortune cookies?! o__o I'll have to check my fortunes XD cause I can't remember them off-hand. but you know, it doesn't have to be particularly a fortune from a fortune cookie, it could be a quote, or a line, or a saying or something. I was just throwing out fortune cookies cause I was having one at the time ;P oh, that piece is quite nice, at first I thought it was Katara and Sokka in the other panel, but KurukxUmmi makes much more sense XD I really like how Toph is drawn, she seems so carefree. here's one that looks like it could totally happen in the show, except that it probably won't.

Maybe fortune cookies a novelty in the western world? I am Chinese myself born in Asia. Our restaurants don't give out fortune cookies.
In fact I've never seen or touched a fortune cookie. Ever. Television doesn't count.
As for going to a restuarant in the first place: If it's not a wedding, why the hell would I want to go in the first place?
The thing about the courses served at a restuarant, is that the dishes aren't meant to fill you. We can have nine to eight different dishes in consecutive order but the portions are small. The second last dish is usually a rice or noodle dish. That's what fills you up. Of course the final dish is a hot or cold dessert
*Inspiration!*
Taang wedding!
'Don't Touch My Hair' That's a nice title. It could happen you know. Aang touched Katara's hair to make fun of it once. He might try the same with Toph.
*Egomania mode*
Yes...I have the power to subvert others to our ship...shall I use this power for good and make more Taang stories...or should I go work for the opposition?

how deprived
wow, it could be, but I always imagined China to be the place "overflowing with Fortune Cookies" XD
The proverbs on them certainly seem to be Chinese, and depending on which restaurant you get yours from, some even have "Confucius says..."
You guys really do use chopsticks though, right? Or is that also a western novelty? XD JK.
for the sake to eat, drink, and be merry? XD
Oh, so that's how Chinese people stay thin XD
wow, it's amazing how different Chinese restaurants are in actual Asia.
XXXXXXXDDDD! Oh no, we've created a monster! ROFL!

I am Chinese but I'm not from China. One of my friend's is from mainland China and she went back to get married next month.
I'm sure her wedding ceremony would be different from the way we do it in my part of Asia. She might be doing it traditionally mixed with some modern elements.
Because seriously to do it in this day and age in the old school traditional method is just whack.
For my part of the world, we've kept the tea ceremony. Tea is served to both sets of parents.
I do recall some traditional parts...umm...the bride does not meet the groom until their at the Ancestral Altar. She's taken there with a full escort, given Toph's wealth...it'll be an army, as bride stealing was common back then. Of course the BlinD Bandit can take care of herself, but this is tradition and since Lao is paying for the wedding as dowry he'd get his way.
At the altar, the couple take three bows. The first to Heaven and Earth (I am not making this up) Second to their ancestors, mainly the grooms as the bride is marrying into his family. (Here's where it gets tricky. Aang's ancestoral tablets and markers are scattered around the world at each of the four temples. To make things easier I'd say they hold the wedding at Aang's original temple and instead of bowing to blood ancestors, they hold the ceremony in the Hall of Avatars.)
The third bow is to each other.
That's it.
No vows.
No kissing of the bride.
They can go consummate their mariage now.
But...there is the wedding feast to clear so...eat first, procreate later.
Oh and Toph's attire would cover her from head to toe. Complete with elaborate headgear plus a veil.
I can't remember every detail...since I'm not married and I sure as hell wouldn't do a traditional wedding.
And since this is Toph, Miss Break The Rules, I'm sure she'd bend a few things. IE the escort part.
"From Gao Ling to the Southern Air Temple? Are you nuts? I'll just go there now and wait for the wedding day!"
As for the escort itself...
Lao: "Are the men ready to escort my little Plum Blossom to her...ergh..husband?"
Guard: "Err...no quite Sir..."
Lao: "Why not?"
Guard: "The men are in traction sir... Little Miss has already left on her own."
I think Toph would stick to the rest of the ceremony.
Of course this is a Chinese styled wedding since the Earth Kingdom seems based on China. The Air Nomads are Tibetan based and I'm positive Tibetan monks don't get married plus we've not be told about Air Nomad courtship traditions on the show so Aang's version of the wedding would be interesting.
Sokka: "So buddy. What do we have to do?"
Zuko: "Yes. It would be good to prepare."
Aang: "I honestly have no idea. I can't find any records of Air Nomad wedding traditions!"
Sokka: "But Air Nomads are allowed to marry?"
Aang: "Of course! If not, how does that explain me?"
Zuko: "So what exactly do you remember?"
Aang: "I was in an all BOYS temple! Gyatso never told me what to do. I was only twelve!"
Sokka: "....I say we take Toph's side."
