Who knows, maybe he fell to the ground because he was shocked to see the living replica of a woman he killed so long ago. It's obvious by the (very) select few shots we have of Katara's mother that they look a lot alike.
Perhaps he was knocked to the ground due to a surprise attack and remained there in shock because he saw "the living replica of a woman he killed so long ago," as kibitzertriplet put it.
kibitzertriplet: I actually think that is a good theory. The two guys do look alike, so it's possible father/son thing there.
But we don't really have enough to go on. I'm not sure that the scene in question happens on Ember Island, it could take place on a very isolated part of the FN, not necessarily on that island. M&B do love to give us just enough to make us foam, but in this case, there's just not enough for me. But like I said, it is a good theory, now let's see how close you are!
Thanks! Now, if you don't mind....
*Fangirl squeal* I can't wait for the new episode!!

I dont know. The old man's clothes look kind of ratty for an Admiral. Still, I could be wrong.
*karma's Aki for the hilarious dialogue*
When what was whispered by the lovers in a cave as they blazed a trail toward freedom will be shouted from the mountain tops. When the world finally sees that the hopes of the little girl from a crumbling Southern Water Tribe are the same as the dreams of the boy in the iceberg. We will begin the next great chapter in the Avatar Saga with one word- KATAANG!
Niiiice theory. ^.^ I like it. And I think you may be right on this one. I guess The Beach wasn't totally pointless at all. They were introducing Chan, the son of the Admiral, who killed Katara's mom, and who the Gaang will meet much later. Pure awesomeness. Can't wait!
