Okay, this has been all over the news lately, and every time I read about it I get angrier and angrier.
Carter, a former President of the United States of America, recently met with Hamas, which has been deemed a terrorist organization by both the United States and Israel. This radical faction of Palestinians is responsible for firing rockets into towns in southern Israel. They refuse to acknowledge Israel and are intent on it's destruction.
I have a lot of personal opinions relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but I'm going to keep it short here. Are the Palestinian people living in bad conditions? Yes they are. Is it Israel's fault? No, it's the fault of the Palestinian leaders and nearby Arab governments. Israel has strict border regulations and it causes harship, but that is to protect themselves. Israel is roughly the size of New Jersey, surrounded by a bunch of huge countries intent on its destruction. If Israel doesn't fight back, it will cease to exist.
Israel already gave away the West Bank and Gaza, and personally I think that was too much. Did the US give land back to the Native Americans? No, and I don't think a state or two is going to be set aside any day now either. And the US government did some terrible things to the Native Americans, while Israel has border laws to protect itself. Not even close to being on the same level. Carter was way out of line when he wrote his book comparing the system in Israel to apartheid. It sickens me that he would make such a comparison. There are Palestinians in the Knesset, Israel's government!
Israel had been a country since the UN Partition Plan was rejected in 1948 by the Arabs. For the leaders of the Palestinians, it is all or nothing. Some people are negotiating, but at the same time others are firing rockets at innocent civilians, killing Israelis, or trying to breach the border. Hamas is the main force doing this. It is true, in terms of numbers, Israel seems to kill more. But the goals of each side are not the same. Hamas wants to kill Israelis, intent on the country's destruction, while Israel is targeting militants. Many innocent people die, but the militants are at fault for this, not Israel.
If rockets were being fired into the US or a European country by a militant group, we would bomb them. And Israel is defending itself, and the world is giving it such a hard time.
During Carter's visit, he put a wreath on the grave of Yasar Arafat. For those who don't know, Yasar Arafar was the mastermind who invented the idea of suicide attacks by airplane. Indirectly he caused September 11th, because he created the concept of that kind of attack. He was a terrorist, and a former president of the United States put a wreath on his grave?
This whole situation sickens me beyond belief. I'm embarrassed to be an American when a former president acts like that. He met with the leader of a terrorist organization, which is unforgivable to me. As far as I'm concerned, we don't negotiate with terrorists.
