Actually, the end date is Dec 8th, so that should be next Saturday. I planned it that time because I have finals coming up next week and don't really have time to log in very much. I'm sorry. Once the contest officially closes, I'll post up all the entries in an incredibly long post for you all to see. (It may be a few posts actually.)
Well, I wouldn't say that it's like a beauty contest since neither the most beautiful nor the most talented win. It's the character that is the most developed and unique.
And, I didn't come up with it. The OC contest was originally planned by the staff here on DH but was discontinued because no one seemed interested in running it. So, I decided to help run the contest and am offering prizes for those who win.
Not unless the compliment is rightfully mine. If it isn't, then it's kind of hard for me to accept it.
Anyway, I recounted the entries and we have a total of 8 entries so far. It's not bad, but I had expected a little more.
Oh well. Closing date is tomorrow! Tomorrow night @ 11:00 PM Pacific is the close time. After that, I'll post all the entries up so that people can see it. Judging will also take place. Please give judging some time (since some of the judges have finals next week). Prizes will also take some time. (You know, the prizes take time to make. It's not something that I slapped together in two minutes.)
Here are the entries. The authors will remain anonymous. Please give some time for judging! If I have missed your entry, please PM me!
Name: Jita (formerly Samnang)
Appearance: Jita is very thin, but muscular. He is about 6ft , and weighs around 160 pounds. He is very tan. His face is a normal size, not too long or short, and his cheek bones are very noticeable. His jaw is very strong, but his teeth are a yellowish color. He has dark green eyes and thin black eyebrows. His lips are light reddish brown, and are chapped from working out in the sun all day. His hair is pitch black and put up in a pony tail with some pieces of hair hanging is his face. He wears a red short sleeved shirt with ragged yellow trimmings. His pants are a darker red with the same rugged yellow trimming and stop at his calves. He goes barefoot while outdoors working but has a pair of brown boots that are very worn and almost too small. His hands are rough and have sores on them from working all day. He wears dark brown gloves that go up to his wrists. His legs are long and also thin and muscular.
Before he was captured, Jita was usually happy, but was somewhat jealous of earth benders. He grew out of his jealousy and focused his energy on getting work done , and eventually training with scimitars. He was usually happy and hard working. He never thought much about the war before his father joined the army. He also liked to spend his time reading anything he could get his hands on. He had many friends and they spent a lot of time together. They were all split up when they were captured.
Jita is very thoughtful about the war. He spends a lot of his time thinking of why it started and how it could be finished. He is thoughtful about many of things, really. When he works he thinks, which has made him very intellectual. He is kind and gentle, and always goes with his instincts. He never goes back on his original plan. He is silent though, and almost never talks at all anymore. But he doesn't do so because he is sad or doesn't want to talk, but he feels like no one will or want to listen.
He hopes to escape from the Fire Nation and go fight in the war with the rest of his Nation, and help the war to finish. After the war finishes, he also wants to attend Bai-Sing-Sei University.
When he was ten he started training with a scimitar. He trained until he was taken away from the Fire Nation. He is fairly skilled, but hasn't practiced in years due to the fact he isn't allowed anywhere near a weapon. If he escapes he hops to find a master to teach him the rest.
Jita(formerly Samnang) was born in a small village on the North-Western shore of the Earth Kingdom. He was born a month early was rather small, but when he turned three he started growing more. He made friends rather easily and had a happy life. When he turned seven a majority of his friends discovered that they could earth bend, and as hard as he tried to earth bend it was obvious that he didn't have the skill. He spent his mainly in the fields working as his friends practiced earth bending. At first he was jealous, but he grew out of it.
When he turned ten, his father left to join the army. Samnang missed him dearly, and was always concerned for his safety. His father sent him letters every month, and Samnang would eagerly await them. As he read tales of his father fighting the fire nation, Samnang grew eager to try to find his own way to fight the fire nation. He started training with his fathers old scimitar, which he found in the shed. Though he was rather clumsy with it at first, after about a year he started to improve training by himself. By 13 he was at a fairly skilled place, but is nowhere near mastering it.
When Samnang was 13, the Fire Nation attacked his small village near the far edge of the Earth Kingdom. Though the village resisted, they were no match for the ruthless Fire Benders and the village was quickly taken. The invaders took all well-bodied boys between the ages of 13 and 20, and sent them to the Fire Nation to work as slaves. His family tried to hid Samnang, but the Fire Nation eventually found him and shipped him to the Fire Nation with the rest of the village boys.
Samnang was renamed Jita (conquered), by his master.

After all she was just a girl. And she had to learn to live with it.
TRIPLE POST OH NOES! Yeah yeah... proboards won't let me post over a certain limit so I split it into two posts.
Special Skill/Weapon: Katana (Japanese Sword) Master
Personality: Mitsu is very kind and gentle. She is always willing to put others before herself. She feels like she is inferior, but she doesn't impose her problems on others. She always wears a pained smile that only a few can see through it.
When fighting, however, she becomes a demon that kills unconditionally because she doesn't want to fail those she is protecting like she has failed her father. In the end she knows she must carry the burden of each sin and hopes to repent by keeping others safe with the power she does have.
Appearance: Slim and medium size like that of an average teenage girl. Her black hair is tied with a red ribbon at the nape of her neck and reaches down to the middle of her back. She has auburn eyes, light skin, and thin lips. She is pretty, but she thinks she looks ordinary. She wears traditional Japanese samurai clothes; sandals with socks, dark blue pants and a crimson shirt. She also carries a katana on her side.
Bio: Born to a very prestigious and successful general and noble lady of the Fire Nation, Mitsu was thought to be the next fire-bending child prodigy. Her mother died giving birth, so she was brought up in a military fashion. Despite her father's hopes she showed no sign of fire-bending as she grew up. Embarrassed because she couldn't bend, her father often ignored her.
Mitsu tried to become stronger by learning how to fight with a sword. She became a master by the time she was fifteen and was declared by Fire Lord Ozai to be the best in the land. However, when she looked to her father for approval, he simply turned away and said he had no daughter. No daughter of his was inferior to fire-bending. Shocked by the statement, she fled the capital and became a wanderer, helping anyone in need and fighting those who would hurt others.
She sees everyone as equal, Fire bender, Earth Bender, Water Bender, Air Bender, and even non-Benders and will not stand for discrimination of any kind. She hopes that when the war is over she will have accomplished her goal: Make everyone equal.
Name: Hu Yuhui Age: 19 Gender: Female Nation: Earth Special Skill/Weapon: Goze (blind shamisen player)
Personality: Some might say Yuhui has two personalities, a stage persona and a true one. Being blind, people are inclined to see her with pity, so Yuhui plays off this impression in her shows. She performs tragic love ballads or songs of mourning, and is known for her ability to move even the most stoic listener to tears. Speaking with potential customers, she behaves like a demure, meek little blind girl. This has made her a lot of money, as it enhances the mood of her performances and won her greater fame. Her ability to move an audience in this way has gotten her jobs performing for some of the wealthiest and most powerful of Earth Kingdom families. In reality, Yuhui is highly confident, playful, fun-loving, and more than canny enough to appreciate the elaborate trick she is pulling. Yuhui loves to play the shamisen, but her personal favorite types of songs are humorous ones, or bawdy folk tunes. She dislikes the tragedies she usually performs, but she knows she can make a lot more money that way. She likes to sit around drinking, playing her instrument, and cracking jokes, but few people know of this side of her. She is often on the road traveling from one performance to another, and keeps few friends besides a couple fellow musicians. She is sympathetic to other disabled people she meets though.
Appearance: She wears a yi with a waist skirt on top of a longer dress. The yi and longer skirt are light green, and the yi has a print of sparrowkeets in flight on the left breast and shoulder. The waist skirt is light yellow. The “Blue Hand” Pai Sho tile hangs by a string from one of her shamisen tuners as a charm. Her hair is dark brown and hangs to her mid-back, although to make it look neater she leaves a thin layer hanging and ties the rest up with a headpiece. She has learned to keep her eyes closed, because her uveitis makes them hideously discolored red.
Bio: Hu Yuhui was born sighted, but at the age of 21 months she contacted a disease of the lymph nodes, what we call Kawasaki’s Disease. She survived, but was left with a condition called uveitis, an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye. By the age of 2 she was completely blind. Her father was a jovial cow-pig farmer, who played the shamisen in his spare time as a hobby. He was well liked by all of their neighbors for his fun-loving nature, humorous songs, and off-color jokes. These traits were passed on to his daughter, along with an affinity for music. Yuhui’s blindness had heightened her hearing, so she became a better musician than her sighted father ever could be. Her father took it in stride and was quite proud of his daughter. Yuhui began to get the old adolescent wanderlust and one day she decided to leave home and seek her fortune. She traveled to different venues around the Earth Kingdom playing her father’s favorite songs, but good as she was, they didn’t catch on. Eventually, she realized that people found her jokey, off-color songs distasteful when sung by a “poor blind girl.” But she decided if most people would be ignorant that way, she might as well profit from it. She thought of just going on and fighting the stereotype directly, but Yuhui wasn’t that kind of person. She switched to singing tragedies, and audiences ate it up. Yuhui traveled from city to city, gaining fame, giving command performances for generals, magistrates, and wealthy nobles. Eventually, she was asked to play for the richest family west of the Great Divide: the Bei Fongs. Lao and his wife adored her performances, but Yuhui took a shine to their ten-year-old daughter, a blind girl like her. They were able to talk about things sighted people just didn’t understand. Toph was the first person Yuhui was able to show her real persona to in a long time. Yuhui taught Toph a couple bawdy songs and blue jokes her parents certainly wouldn’t have liked. Yuhui stayed for a few weeks but then moved on to other venues. She recently received word that her father has taken sick and is currently on her way back to her home village in the central Earth Kingdom.
Name: Kiga “The Pit” Age: 33 Gender: Male Nation: Earth Special Skill/Weapon: Competitive Eater
Personality: Kiga enjoys the simple things in life: good friends, good home, and especially good food. He’s no scholar, but he can display a surprising amount of intelligence when he applies himself. He is a genius when it comes to food, and he also takes his training regimens for eating contests seriously. He is quite frightened of fighting though, and loves the peaceful life he has created for himself. When he needs excitement, he enters an eating contest. He can sometimes forget his manners, but he generally treats others with respect—unless maybe they’ve challenged his ability to eat. He only becomes grim and depressed when he is reminded of the time he ran from a battle with a squad of Fire Nation soldiers. However, this is a dark secret buried deep within his mind, and so few people know of it in the first place that no one has ever actually brought it up to him.
Appearance: Kiga is actually very thin. He wants to be sure his stomach can be allowed to expand and he exercises to avoid getting a “fat belt.” He is of average height, not particularly muscular. His eyes are brown and his hair is black. His hair is close-cropped and pulled into a small Earth Kingdom-style bun. He also has a small goatee. He wears a sleeveless yellow-green robe and brown trousers with brown leg wrappings.
Bio: Kiga was born to a restauranteur mother and father in a mid-size city in the eastern Earth Kingdom. He had a normal childhood, but even from a young age he ate a lot. As a baby he nursed for very long intervals, and when he got older he ate leftover food from the restaurant. When he was old enough he started to help out his parents, bussing tables and such. As he grew to be a teenager, Kiga’s parents taught him more about their trade, like how to cook, and over time he became very good. However, when he was 16 a rival restaurant opened across the street. Kiga’s parents’ restaurant did fine until the other restaurant sabotaged them by setting elephant mice loose in their building. Kiga’s parents went to the authorities, but they had no proof of sabotage and from then on only the most loyal customers still went to their place. After a while it seemed like they would lose the restaurant, but one day Kiga’s mother got an idea. She staged an eating contest against the other restaurant, utilizing Kiga’s talents against a challenger appointed by the rival. Kiga’s mother trained him hard for the competition, and he was not worried even when he saw the challenger, who was much fatter and larger than he. Kiga was served his restaurant’s food and the challenger was served that of the other, and whichever food was consumed in a greater quantity would be considered better. Of course, both restaurants served equally good food; it all depended on the eating skills of the contestants. After an hour and a half the challenger had collapsed and Kiga was still asking for more. No one could fathom how he could possibly put away that much food, and that was how he earned his nickname, “The Pit.” Kiga decided that cooking was nice, but he really loved competitive eating. He wanted to travel the Earth Kingdom entering every eating contest he could find. Unfortunately, he was drafted into the army before he could get the money together to go on his journey. Kiga became the de facto cook of his unit. They saw little action, but they were in one small battle. On that occasion Kiga was unable to control himself, and when he saw the enemy he ran and hid until the battle was over. Unable to face the shame of his cowardice, he lay down until his unit discovered him, and claimed he had been knocked out. But soon after his time of service was complete, and he returned home. Eventually he was able to put his disgrace out of his mind for the most part and took over his parents’ restaurant, but some nights the memory still haunts him. He married a local girl and they have a son who is currently 3. Another child is on the way. Kiga continued to participate in the eating competitions at the seasonal city fairs, but he abandoned his idea of traveling. He became something of a local hero because he was such a prolific gurgitator, and challengers began showing up to challenge him, sometimes coming from quite far away. Kiga did manage to increase the popularity of his “sport” somewhat, but much less than he had planned to as a youth. His life is happy and simple for the most part, as long as he can forget his secret shame.
Name: Fen Li (goes by Fen)
Special Skill/Weapon: She is a healer/apothecary
Personality: Fen is a quiet, intuitive person and is very much an "earth child." She prefers solitude to large crowds of people, and loves being outside more than anything. As stated, she doesn't talk much, but prefers to observe. She has a few close friends that she opens up to. Fen is also very shy, especially around new people. She also smiles a lot.
She values human life very much, which is part of the reason she decided to learn the art of healing. Fen also believes that everyone is basically good at heart, and she thinks that no matter how evil one seems, they can still turn from their ways.
However she is a bit naive and tends to overly trust people, but if anyone should betray her trust she will become extremely angry about the fact and is very cold towards the person until they apologize-and even then she will have a hard time trusting them again.
Appearance: Fen is slightly shorter than average, and while she's far from chubby, she isn't very thin either. Fen's skin is lightly tanned, partly from genetics and partly from the sun. Her eyes are hazel and her dark brown hair comes to her shoulders. Fen's hair is usually in a bun at the nape of her neck, because she can't stand having her hair down when she's busy.
She usually wears a loose sage green dress (made of cotton) that comes to her knees, and tight light brown pants underneath, for her modesty. She also wears dark leather boots that come to mid-calf, and the sole of the shoe is flat. The billowy sleeves of her dress come to her elbows, and have a few small pockets sewn on the inside to hold any herbs she pick to use for her medicines. A strip of leather holds her hair in its bun.
Bio: Fen Li was born in a small Earth Kingdom town near Omashu. Her father was drafted into the the army to fight in the war, as was her older brother Qing. They were both captured by the Fire Nation, and both killed by disease when Fen was fifteen. Fen and her mother grieved terribly for them, and her mother was never quite the same again.
However, instead of letting their deaths fuel a thirst for revenge against the Fire Nation, Fen decided that learning how to heal those who were sick was a better way of honoring their spirits.
She begged the local doctor to apprentice her, and after several weeks he agreed. She eagerly began to learn all the ways one might cure illnesses or fix physical ailments.
Because she lived in a small town, the doctor only knew a little about medicines and herbal cures. Soon the doctor told her that he had taught her everything he knew. After much consideration and a tearful farewell to her mother, Fen left for the nearby city of Omashu to continue her apprenticeship there at the age of seventeen.
After about a month in Omashu, Fen convinced one of the Omashu doctors, an elderly woman named Tien, to let Fen apprentice with her. Fen lived with the kind old lady for five years, learning all about medicines and cures. However, Tien soon died of old age, and so Fen became the resident apothecary in Tien's place.
Life was well for a while, and Fen managed to have a steady income from many of the sick people in the neighborhood. She sent money back to her mother whenever possible. However, about a year or so after Tien's death, the Fire Nation invaded Omashu and soon renamed it New Ozai.
Fen tried as hard as possible to not attract the attention of the new government. Even though she knew they were her enemies, and had effectively killed her father and brother, she wasn't willing to risk her life to try and overthrow them. It was still hard to make a living though, with the ever increasing taxes, but Fen managed to get by. But now she's heard rumors that the Avatar is nearby, and so her story begins....
Alright everyone. I received responses from 2/3 judges, but that'll have to do because I don't want to prolong this any further. I would like to thank Fadius and PigglyWiggly for their help. Below are the winners along with their character's name and some comments made by the two judges.
1st PLACE : Manzai : Yu Hui -- Yu Hui is original because she doesn't seem to be an uber-awesome fighter but is still cool. She's a blind musician -- let's just give her props for actually doing something cool. Can somebody say Mozart?
2nd PLACE : Manzai : Kiga -- What? A guy built for eating competitions? I would have never thought of this. I commend the writer!
3rd PLACE : Zukosfire5 : Fen Li -- Fen Li is pretty useful. I mean, if you can't have a fighter, you need a healer, right? The thing that caught my attention the most is some government intervention. Finally, a profile that actually incorporates the stranglehold that government has on people!
Judge's choice : d-1-'n'-only : Kani -- Because she believes that she's an airbender damnit! And she's extremely young. The only weird thing is the "witch" part. Little kids can be so mean.
Awards will be posted once it's made. In the meantime, I hope everyone amuses themselves with the other contests going on. Once I'm feeling better (since I'm still recovering and am typing under the hawk eyes of my mother), I'll try and continue the contest.
