it's not just that. he's a team leader, an overcomer and an inspiration to others.
anyway, what other standards could you use to decide the greatest olympian ever?

@ck: Drop the gorilla joke now.
I allowed the first one but now it's just being disrespectful and insulting. Not only that but with those kind of posts you're not adding anything constructive and meaningful to the discussion.

I really do not believe that setting a record for most medals won in a single competition makes a person the greatest Olympian ever, imo it is far from it. It is simply a record. I kind of have to agree ^^; I mean, swimmers have the potential to win so many medals simply because there are so many categories in swimming while in other sports you usually only have one chance. I'm not downplaying Phelps' achievement however I don't think all the medals automatically makes him the GREATEST olympian ever. I definitely think he's one of the greats, however. I'll prolly be mauled but I dunno, I like Phelps but I just don't like watching his races anymore because I always assume he's going to win. Last night was a shocker, though. I feel so bad for that Serbian guy just because he was so close. Also, I'm really surprised to hear Tyson Gaye didn't qualify for the 100! But I guess he just wasn't healthy enough and I heard that his form has been looking different. I'm also glad that that Swedish wrestler got stripped of his bronze. >_> He was being immature so I think he deserved it.

Michael Phelps's freakish limbs make him the perfect swimmer.

I am only watchin the Olympics for the Gymnastics, Swimming, and the Martial Arts. I think this is the last year for Taekwondo. THis year Wushu has been approved by the IOC as a tournament. Wushu isnt a demonstration, exhibition, or a regular sport. Im looking forward to it.

Yesterday after the race when they interviewed Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz, they asked Spitz what he thought of the race, he'd said "One word: epic." I totally thought he was about to say "epic win", but i remembered he wouldn't say something like that...lol
Phelps is kind of disproportional though. His wingspan is 3 inches longer then his height, which probably helped him touched the wall first. Not exactly gorilla proportions, but still a bit off.
And anyway, you have to remember that even though swimming is one of the, if not, the only sport with enough categories for someone to get 8 gold medals in, but most can't because they aren't skilled enough to be qualified for all 8 different lengths and swims. It doesn't hurt that he's an inspiration to many and overcame a disability by doing what he does.
btw, does anyone know if they'll be showing men's sabre fencing on TV today? The newspaper mentioned that it'd be at 8 PM central, but didn't say if they'd show it on NBC or anything. I wanted to see Tim Morehouse fence, so...yeah.

I HAVE BEEN PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY THE UNPREDICTABLE NATURE OF THIS OLYMPICS.
JK, I was surprised when they actually did something about the gymnastics judging.

AHH, THEY DID IT. THEY FREAKING DID IT.
And I miss the medal ceremony because my dad needed someone to come with him to CVS, so I'm kind of irked, but still. I just feel a bit bad for Brendan Hansen, Andrew Peirsol, and Jason Lezak because they're being overshadowed by Phelps, but they seem to be well aware that he deserves the attention after his hard work.

What did they change about the gymnastics? I didn't hear anything... LITERALLY the p****d off Russian technical director came down and yelled at the judges in the middle of the all around for them to actually judge fairly. Edit: Don't bypass the swearfilter.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH F**** F**** F**** F**** F****
The American shooter in the 50m 3 position rifle event had a commanding lead on his last shot and COMPLETELY CHOCKED AND LOST EVERYTHING.
FOR THE SECOND OLYMPICS IN A ROW
In 2004 on his last shot he missed the target. This time he shot a 4.8 out of 10.

Jesus Christ I feel SO D**N BAD FOR THIS GUY.
His marriage to the Czech women gold medal shooter after they met after he chocked in 2004 was such a happy inspiring story. Now it seemed that everything was going so great for him and that he was finally going to redeem himself and have his life better then ever with his loving olympic shooter wife, both champions.
CHRIST
