The Book Club read this book and is discussing it today. If anyone else has read the book then feel free to post. I wanted to start the discussion with two questions:
1. In the beginning, Hillari Kimble seems to be the only person who openly dislikes Stargirl. But then others begin to feel the same way as Hillari. Do you think groups of people need a leader, like Hillari Kimble, to turn opinion against another person?
2. Do you, as a reader, like Stargirl? If you were a student at Mica High, would you reach out to her as Dori Dilson does, or reject her as Hillari Kimble does? Do you think the students of Mica High are ultimately too harsh with Stargirl?
You don't have to answer these questions if you don't want to. They were in the back of my book and I thought it would be interesting to see how everyone answered them.
My answers:
1. I think that groups of people do need to be led by a single person. You see it all the time in high school and in junior high as well. There is always one person who does everything the "right way" and therefore has the most followers in the school. The example that I can think of is in Mean Girls where they cut the holes in the girl's shirt and she just wears it and the next day all the girls have done that.
2. I do like Stargirl. I think that she does what everyone else was afraid to do and doesn't care what they think of her. I would like to say that I would have accepted her but I really don't know if I would have or not. I was pretty shallow at times in high school. I think the students at Mica take things way to far with Stargirl. But that's the way high school is; harsh.
Enough of my rambling, what do you all think?
