Without looking at the article and using my knowledge of all those books; is dystopian a futuristic "utopian" society gone wrong? Not necesarily future. But it is often set in the future. Its not always ment to be a utopia anyway, sometimes society just gets that way on its own and everyone knows its bad. Like "Children of Men"

You met Lois Lowry? Ooooooh what a wonderful thing! She's been such a huge influence on my life, mostly with "Number the Stars". That was a wonderful, wonderful book.
Didn't she do another book? About a boy living with his relative, and there's some kind of 'giving' machine that gives people whatever they want, but it makes the forest bad and scary or something? Maybe that's another author.

Oooh! read this book this year for a thing in my Reading class. I understood it, and actually liked it, but the other students in my class have the brains of 20 year olds, yet maintain the maturity of a 2 year old. -_- The ending was so mysterious...

The book meant a lot, I suppose. I suppose it gave the message that conformity is bad and originality and uniqueness is good, and that the world is fine as it is.
I've read the sequel, in which a town has it's entire history on this one rod, and these two young people are supposed to put the next little bit on for the rest of their lives. There are some other details too, but I don't care enough to recall.
The problem I have with books like this is that they give a nice little message, but the people who are likely to listen are also smart enough to figure out that kinda stuff on their own, thus making it little more than a nice book to have schoolchildren read.
I'm not criticizing the book, just the message. The book is full of wonderful writing. I just can't stand it myself.

I never really enjoyed any of the books in school.
It's pretty much all books on racism, hatred, conformity, etc that are trying to preach to me. And I can't stand it. Nothing from school has stopped any of the people I know from being the things the books preach against.

The ending was so mysterious... Lois Lowry said it wasnt ment to be mysterious. She didnt know people would interpret it as Jonas dying.

Gathering Blue was kind of a companion novel, it was about a wholey different set of characters in a different town with different problems, but the town that Jonas reached comes in at the end. The sequel to both of them is called Messenger, it's not as good as either.

It's weird because if you read all of lois lowrys books you'll notice that Messenger just barely mentions one of the characters in the giver. It's very subtle.

The Giver is one of my favorite books of all time. I love it!! It so well written. I read it in the 7th grade too. I remember when my classmates would beg the teacher so we could read it. It was something that was something that I had to read. When I read the ending I found myself wanting more. I didn't know there was a sequel. Gathering Blue, eh?.......I'm gonna read it. I'm really curious to know what happened.
