Because it's amazing. If you draw the obvious parallel between Veidt and the marine in "The Black Freighter" it's made quit clear that Veidt made the wrong decision, at least from the author's POV. And yes I only figured this out the other day, don't make fun of me for being stupid like that.

Watchmen is so amazing! To me its better than V for Vendetta because its the complete package. The work, the art, everything. Im so scared they'll screw it up when they try to turn it into a movie.

Kaneda - I've got to admit, I didn't twig until I read your post, but you're quite right. Duh. Feeling fairly dumb right now for not having made that connection before now. Wish I had my copy with me - you're making me want to re-read it.
The movie posters look freaking awesome, though! I'm optimistic depite the abortion that was 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'...poor old Alan doesn't have the best record of movie adaptations, does he? Although, that said, I liked 'V for Vendetta' well enough. I thought that the changes they made served the story well. (Although, sweet merciful heavens, Natalie Portman's accent was jarring. Ack. She's a cracking wee actress, but I could have done without the twig Van meal accent.)
(edited to add: BWAH! Oh, bless! Distant Horizons' software has just magically bowdlerized the name of the famous actor from Mary Poppins into Twig Van Meal. Perhaps I should have called him Richard Van WomanWithComfortableShoes? )
Has anyone read 'Top Ten'? I was just rereading the two graphic novels, and then 'The Forty Niners', and, good God, Alan Moore really is something else. I've been mainlining him this week, actually - just bought TLoEG: The Black Dossier, and, sweet weeping mother of heaven, it's good. So bloody clever! ('What Ho, Gods of the Abyss' had me making embarrassing snorting noises in public as I read it. Bertie Wooster meets Cthulu. It's pure, unbridled crackfic.) And I KNOW there's stuff that's going over my head, dang it - it's so thoroughly erudite! I'm pretty darned well read, and fairly catholic in my reading taste, but I know that there are references that fly by me.
'Top Ten: Beyond the Farthest Precinct', which I also picked up this week, was, in contrast, something of a disappointment. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, it not being by Moore. It really underlined for me what an exceptional writer he is; with 'The Forty Niners' and with 'The Black Dossier' I really did find myself sitting there marvelling, once I'd reached the last page; such scope, such wit, and such compassion too - I do think this is the crux of the matter, actually. Moore is taking these ridiculous scenarios, these impossibly over-the-top figures and avatars...and he's making them human. He's investing them with dignity, with flaws, with dirt under the fingernails and hopes and fears. 'TT:BtFP' read like mediocre fanfic, particularly after 'TT:TFN'.
