I guess pokemon has a few nnice/memorable tunes, but only a few.
Unfortunately the pokemon battle theme was not used by an olympic synchronized swimming team.

I think the best video game sound tracks would seriously have to be Burnout 3: Takedown and Burnout: Revenge. I will agree that the soundtrack for KH2 was great as well. The Final Fantasy soundtracks are in a class all of it's own.
For my retro choice: All soundtracks from the Mortal Combat games. I was totally blown away that they used Stabbing Westward's "Can't Happen Here" as the main theme and "Violent Mood Swings" for certain battles. (Off of the album titled "Ungod") The band was not very well known at the time, yet if you liked NIN or Ministry- you KNEW who they were and loved them too.

Just for reference...Naausica was never a game?! Miyazaki would never allow that to happen.

This is why I said Quake 1 had a good soundtrack. It was NIN.

Yasunori Mitsuda is my all-time favorite video game music composer.
My favorite soundtracks include Xenogears, Xenosaga Ep. I, Chrono Cross, Shadow Hearts II, and the soundtracks from the Wild ARMs series (Michiko Naruke did most of these).
