What? Ryuk doesn't seem evil evil. He'd only do evil if it's fun (like dropping the Death Note on Earth).

I really really need to start watching this...I started reading the manga and it's FREAKIN sweet but I haven't had the time to watch it on A.S. I did watch the first episode on the net though

I watched the whole thing online. I'm dvr-ing the A.S. episodes, but I never take time to watch them. I'm not so sure I like Light's voice. He says such over-the-top things ("I will be the god of this new world!") and they just don't ring true. I wonder if I understood Japanese if it would ring true at all in that language.

He says the same exact things in the Japanese version. The voice is the only difference.

I know, but does it sound as stilted in Japanese as in English? That's what I was wondering. Is it a line that comes more easily in one language than in another?

Japanese is more fluid, with breaks in between every few words or sentences. You have to understand that English is not a very attractive language (although not nearly as bad as German).

^^ So when he says something that sounds too over-the-top (or when anyone does for that matter) in English does it sound not so nutty in Japanese. I understand that the rhythms are completely different, but I'm wondering if perhaps the translation shouldn't be quite as exact for the dub. Maybe pay attention to those different rhythms when translating so an English speaking VA can say the words with some believability.

I've been starting to watch the shows on adult swim. To be honest I've never been a fan of the super dark and twisted Anime (I'm always afraid some tenticle monster will randomly appear and ummm. . . . . yeah nvm) but after watching the show I gotta to say I'm lovin it. Very psychological and very cleaver. The english voices sound great to me, but man did they use a lot of Gundam Wing voices or what?
Light = Catra (blonde hair dude) Death Note Angel dude = Zex Marques L = (Zex original master what's his name guy who was the Dragon Gundam main badguy)

English is a very attractive language. I agree with German sounding awful, but I think Vietnamese is really bad too.

Yeah I don't like German too much. I wasn't aware though that English wasn't very attractive...

I expect every language on earth is capable of sounding either good or bad. I mean like a million words per language, obviously some words are going to sound better than others, and certain combinations will flow more smoothly than others, and some will just sound better or worse depending upon the speaker, and then one must also consider how much thought is given to composing words, either in speech or in lyrics. You can't just say one language is ugly and one is beautiful, it's the same thing as stereotyping people.
