All the reccomendations here seem spot-on, but I'm surprised no one has suggested Paranoia Agent. You should also check out Satoshi Kon's other works, especially Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika. Serial Experiments Lain is another must seen series. Some other shows that haven't been mentioned yet: Oniisama e (Brother, Dear Brother): Since it's an old show, the animation is very different from what you may be used to, but it's a great series, that I think deserves more recognition in the U.S. The manga was created by Ikeda Riyoko, who also created The Rose of Versailles, a shojo classic. Maria-sama ga Miteru (Maria Watches Over Us): A good shoujo-ai anime, adapted from a series of ongoing novels. It's just been licensed for release in the U.S., so you should keep an eye out for it. Full Moon o Sagashite: One of the best shoujo series I've ever seen/read. In my opinion, the best of Arina Tanemura's works. The Cockpit: It offers a unique glimpse of World War II, I highly reccomend this, and Grave of the Fireflies, another WWII-centric anime. Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water: Directed by the same person as Neon Genesis Evangelion, if I'm not mistaken. A great, fun series. Kaze to Ki no Uta (The Song of Wind and Trees): The first ever shounen-ai anime (OVA). Released in 1976 and adapted from a much longer manga. Monster: One of the greatest anime/manga ever. Extremely underappreciated, but totally worth the watch. xxxHolic: Great work by CLAMP. Nana: I reccomend this along with Ai Yazawa's lesser-known series Paradise Kiss. Loveless: Great shounen-ai anime, adapted from an even greater manga. And the English volumes come with awesome psychoanalyses of the characters by editor Lillian Przbyl-Diaz. Angelic Layer: Another CLAMP classic. =3 Princess Tutu: An imaginative series, suitable for all ages. Hmm... That's all I can think of now, but with all the reccomendations in this thread, you should be busy for awhile.

@ Godhunter: Yeah I never really saw too much of Banner of the Stars, since the TV show that was showing it got cancelled. My logic is that since Crest was good than Banner must be good as well (just like how Slayers is good than Next and Try must be good as well). I really don't want to watch the sub mainly cause I'm tired of reading Japanese subtitles. My philosophy is that if the dub is tollerable than I'd rather watch the dub than deal with the sub. Now if only I could find the dub online to watch for free. . . . . .

. If you're into boxing the best boxing manga I've ever seen is Hajime no Ippo hands down, but that is like 800 chapters. holy crudmuffins you read Ippo to? I do love the manga and still follow it regularly, but I would suggest if you want to recommend it to someone check out the anime first. It covers the first 31 volumes of the manga and is very close to it only omitting some jokes and very minor characters back stories. To me it's one of the best (and often underestimated) animes out there. Lots of people like to think it's just a "boxing" anime but there's tons of great humor and strong themes of brotherhood in it. My 3 suggestions (cause they haven't been suggested) 12 Kingdoms (series), beautiful anime with good storytelling. Starts out like another "girl gets sent to a fantasy world" type anime but the story telling is tight and compelling while exploring the very rich history/culture of the fantasy realm (though avoid the last arc as it leave it on a weak note cause it seem unfinished). Code Geass (series), seriously one of the best mix of mecha action and dramatic story telling out there (animated by CLAMP). Wonderfully dark and mature at times from dealing with issues of racism to weapons of mass destruction but knows how to be light hearted with some harem comedy throw in early on. I really can't recommend this enough. Macross Plus (movie), great high flying action and a wonderful score by Yoko Kanno. There's an OVA version of it, but the movie version has better story editing and some additional scenes that create a more satisfying ending. Great ride if you're looking for some punch in a 1 shot sitting.

@tung: Yea, I mean Banner wasn't bad, but it lacks that magic that Crest had in my opinion. I've watched bits and pieces and it's fairly good, but I couldn't stand seeing my Crest characters like that Also, if you have Netflix they have all the Crest and Banner and a lot of anime in general. attonbitus: I love Ippo! It took me a good month to catch up with the manga, and I almost stopped in the late 700s because the releases were getting really slow and I wasn't as captivated, but I still keep up to date with it ^^ I almost forgot about this one. Legend of Himiko is an anime that is also a girl gets sent to another planet thing, but this time its a guy and a girl. Its hilarious and fun, plus it has a great opening/closing song Also one of my all time favorites that I can't believe I forgot to mention, RahXephon. Its a giant robot anime, but its so deep that it would be a shame to label it as just a giant robot anime. In a way it is like Eva, for those of you who have seen Eva, and gets a bit complicated as you wind down toward the ending. There is a movie, but they ruin the best and biggest plot twist thing in the first five minutes >< and its basically the series condensed to an hour and a half, so I'm gonna say if you want the full thrill watch the series.

Read Yuu Watase manga!! If you like love triangles and MANY naughty moments, then you'll love her.
Some of the stuff she's done:
Absolute Boyfriend (I wanna read this!!) Ayashi no Ceres (Ceres: Celestial Legend) Fushigi Yugi Imadoki Alice 19th
DNAngel by Yukiru Sugisaki is great, but she stopped the series at vol. 11 to work on something else. Who knows when she'll pick it up again.
Yami no Matsui (Descendants of Darkness) is hilarious!!!!! (I remember the first couple of manga volumes being more serious, though). Not sure who the author is, though.

I read more manga that I do watch it like random graphic novvel sereis, a lot, some of the series I've read are, Inuyahsa, Naruto, Tokyo Mew Mew, Girl Got Game, DN Angel, Kare Kano, and Fruits Basket. I'm still reading some but I read more than I watch. Those are what I've read and what i enjoyed, I don't know about the shows but I liked the books.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet but for anime:
Le Chevalier D'Eon
-Still haven't finished this but it's awesome once you get into it!
Kino's Journey
-If you're not into philosophical type anime though it might not be your cup of tea
For manga:
Ludwig Kakumei
-Hilarious! New twist on Fairy Tales by the Queen of Gothic manga Kaori Yuki
Count Cain
-Also by Kaori Yuki but the earlier drawings need some getting used to. Gothic Horror in that mystery type way

I've just recently finish watching Scrapped Princess. I definetely recommend watching it and I would put it on the great list. The series is in my opinion on par with FMA and the character designs are made by the same guy who did Cowboy Bebop.

Well for me it's just personal taste, so some of you might not share the same opinion. I'm not going to lie to some the main girl can be awfully annoying. For me she was alright (trust me there are a lot of Anime females that are a thousand times more annoying than her) and actually grows on you a bit over time. The heart of the show really shines in the supporting cast which is extremely well developed kind of like Avatar. All I can say is watching it at least once is not a waste of time.

Full Moon o Sagashite: One of the best shoujo series I've ever seen/read. In my opinion, the best of Arina Tanemura's works. xxxHolic: Great work by CLAMP. Nana: I reccomend this along with Ai Yazawa's lesser-known series Paradise Kiss. Angelic Layer: Another CLAMP classic. =3 Princess Tutu: An imaginative series, suitable for all ages. I've heard of CLAMP. A lot of their works sound really good. About Nana.... I read the first chapter in Barnes & Noble one day when I was 11 or 12. Personally, I loved it, but my parents don't approve of Smex in manga and or anime. *sniff* Wish I could get it. And I started watching Princess Tutu over the summer. That's a great series. I'm trying to find time to start Full Moon O Sagashite now.
