Ok, I realize I'm so behind on this, but I'm just now starting to get into this and I think it's a really cool show. I've seen the movie and am now trying to catch up on the series. The characters are really interesting, the world they inhabit is at once gritty and surreal, and the overall feel is like a good novel you can sink your teeth into - so I thought it deserved its own dedicated thread. So come here to talk about Spike, Jet Black, Faye, Ed, and of course, everyone's favorite data dog, Ein!

=)
I'm up to "Session" three. I love the music, and the characters so far.
Nagging plot device: how do Spike and Jet survive when they never earn any money on their missions? Kind of reminds me of Firefly where bad luck or morals always override the monetary reward involved with the mission.

^^^I think that's how it is for Spike and Jet most of the time. Though I get the impression that they do get paid for the bounties we don't see on the show, and the ones we see are the more interesting ones that usually result in zip as far as cash goes. Though the crew of the Bebop is short on food a lot - it's sort of a running theme - but they *do* have to survive somehow, and there's mention in a later episode of a money vault they have on the ship, so I guess they do save up when they can. Btw Danny, thanks for resurrecting this thread!

My favorite anime of all time. I have the series on dvd, and it's really one of the main reasons I even watch anime.

It is a very good anime and I have seen it all. Even the movie *bragging a little* It is awesome and I love it. Unfortunately, most of my anime friends think it is stupid. I asked them why and they just said, "...because it is." But anyway, ED is probably my favorite character and I am a little mad how it ends. (no spoilers here)

Your anime friends think it's stupid? It's awesome! Maybe they just don't appreciate the music (but I love it, and it works so well with the show).

^How can they not appreciate the music!? Thats like the best part about it! The ending wasn't bad, but it could've been delayed for a few dozen more episodes!

Cowboy Bebop is the best anime I've ever had the pleasure of watching, beating out a bunch of great series like FMA, Death Note, Wolf's Rain, etc. It's very "take it or leave it" in nature, but despite that there's a lot to glean from the show. And the characters are very real, with the exception of Ed, who is somehow better off with that aspect of her character missing in action. They find themselves in such fantastic circumstances in nearly every episode, but you're so caught up in them and the accuracy with which their emotions are portrayed that you forget all about that and learn to appreciate the show even more.
I love the universe that Watanabe has created, too. The slang terms, the space travel, cryogenic preservation, computer hacking, gambling, drugs (including the oft-mentioned red eye), crime, the government cooperating with bounty hunters... All of it. We've seen bits and pieces of it before in other works, but he blends it all together so successfully that you start to believe that there's no other possibility for the year 2071 than the world that Cowboy Bebop is set in.
Anybody who hasn't watched Cowboy Bebop should watch it. Anyone who is in the process of watching Cowboy Bebop should finish it with all due speed. Anyone who has already seen Cowboy Bebop in its entirety should watch it again, starting right now. It's just that good.

Kind of reminds me of Firefly where bad luck or morals always override the monetary reward involved with the mission. I figure we only see a fraction of their mission and they do complete jobs from time to time that we don't see. as far as people not liking it. It's not a harem anime with "moe" girls nor is it a DBZ/Bleach type anime with never ending power level. Believe it or not, some don't like Jazz! Crazy i know but that could be a factor as well.

Cowboy Bebop is the best anime I've ever had the pleasure of watching, beating out a bunch of great series like FMA, Death Note Nuuuu. I would place FMA 1st. =p I don't know whether to call it the artwork or the animation itself, but FMA seems like a more 'polished' product. I like the writing equally well for both, however.

FMA's animation definitely looks more polished. I'd like to think that part of Cowboy Bebop's style is fit to go with the jazz theme - sort of loose, on the fly, so the animation is a little messier, if that makes any sense.

Well, FMA originally ran from 2003 to 2004. Cowboy Bebop debuted five years before FMA did, so the animation is naturally going to be a little grittier. However, Bebop is a much cleverer anime on the whole, which is why it'd be #1 on my list.

Bebop, to me, doesn't hold a match to FMA. The concepts are entirely different. And even though the colors in FMA are brighter than Bebop, the animation is much, much more detailed in Bebop right down the folds in peoples' clothes and the distinct lines on a gun. Bebop is much more realistic (if that can be said about such an anime).
And, Spike is such a complex yet loveable character. ^_^

I have to admit... as weird as it sounds, I'm completely falling in love with Spike Spiegel. Spike (paraphrased here): "You know, Jet, there are three things I can't stand: Kids, pets, and women with attitude. So tell me, why are all three neatly assembled on this ship?"
