(500) Days of Summer 9.5/10
I adored this movie. Everything was so cute, I loved the leads (Zooey not so much but not due to her acting. I just didn't like her character as much) I liked the whole premise and the execution was spot on. I also really liked what the characters wore, the very genuine but still entertaining take on a relationship, and the humor interspersed throughout the film. Definitely one of the best I've seen this year. I daresay it may be one of my new favorite movies!
Also, Ana if you're reading this, I really think you should see this movie! I think you'd really like it =D

Death Race 9/10 i was thinking this would be an awful movie (considering i don't really care for car racing movies) but it surprisingly captured my attention through the whole movie! very actiony and suspenseful. See it if you like: killing, cars, racing, or watching people race for their lives (literally!)

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince-7.5 out of 10. I found that I enjoyed the last movie more, since it had more life to it. There where some part of HBP that just took to long, such as some of the romantic scenes. There should have been more on old Voldy, but alas.

DOUBLE FEATURE!!!
District 9 (2009, Blomkamp) -- 8.5/10
It is said that the great sci-fi stories expose some sort of truism of the world we live in. The ad campaign for District 9 alone exemplifies this belief. As horrible as the idea that non-human oppression may be (or oppression in general), that is only the backdrop for the story. Considering the lackluster slog of sci-fi films this summer coming from America (the only good one being J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot), it's nice to see that the fine folks in New Zealand and South Africa can cook up something worthwhile.
In the near future, a large mothership has parked itself over the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. By the time humans finally cut into the side of the ship, they discover roughly a million malnourished, scared, and leaderless aliens. In a gesture of goodwill, humanity offers them food and shelter, in the form of a refugee camp almost directly under the ship. This camp, the titular District 9, quickly becomes a slum populated by the aliens (called "prawns" because of their appearance) and Nigerian nationals. Fast forward 20-years. The weapons corporation Multinational United (abbreviated MNU), which has been assigned to govern D-9, has begun handing out eviction notices to the prawns, with employee Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) leading the charge. When Wikus reaches the home of one prawn, named Christopher Johnson by the MNU, he discovers what appears to be some sort of alien meth lab with a silver cylinder inside. After examining it, it shoots an inky liquid at him. Little does Wikus realize that the liquid has set into motion what may be the worst week of his life . . .
The actual story is fairly simple and straightforward, so don't expect anything earth-shattering in that department. What really sells this film is how far the filmmakers went to make this film "real." Not only is there some practical sociology and research that went into what would happen if such an event occurred, but all the expository parts of the film were shot in a documentary style. By the time that the actual story was being told, I barely noticed it switching to a more traditional "narrative" presentation. Since Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, was producing, director Neill Blomkamp had the facilities of Wingnut Films and WETA Digital at his disposal and a lot of care was taken in crafting the Prawns and ensuring that the distant mothership looked like it was a couple miles above the city. Unfortunately for the squeamish, having Jackson involved creatively also means that some gory parts are included. In summary, see this movie. It's got great action, good heart, and great effects. The story may be cliched, but it still works great. My only wish is that they do not do a sequel of this because it works so well as a one-off film.
Coraline (2009, Selick) -- 8.5/10
In a time when most, if not all, animated films are done by computers, it is refreshing to see a film done with the slow, laborious process known as stop-motion animation, where small figures are moved a tiny amount in between the photographing of individual frames. Henry Selick, the director, made his claim to fame with The Nightmare Before Christmas, and there is a lot of visual overlap.
Based on the Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, Stardust, The Graveyard Book) novel of the same name, the story focuses on Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning), a young girl who has moved from urban Pontiac, Michigan to the Pink Palace Apartments way out in the boondocks. She feels neglected by her parents, who are busy writing up a gardening catalog, and is bored by her surroundings. After her stalker/friend Wybie (Robert Baily Jr.) gives her a doll that looks uncannily like her, she discovers a tiny little door that has been wallpapered over. One night, she opens it and discovers an Other World, populated by Other People that she has met in the real world, including Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and Other Father (John Hodgman). In many ways, she finds this world better than her real life, but she's confronted with a problem when Other Mother wishes Coraline to stay.
Because it's stop-motion, things like perspective and lighting plays an important role in the look of a film and not only is it well-shot, it's well-lit. Even the wormhole between worlds is spellbinding and was achieved with merely pieces of wire, pantyhose, and colored lights. The great source material contributed to the great story and they don't get much better than Neil Gaiman, at least not among contemporary writers. Not only is this great for fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas, it's great for any fan of a good story. Bear in mind, however, that because this is animated does not make this necessarily a family-friendly movie, as there are bits of near-nudity.

Gake no Ue no Ponyo also known as "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea"
10/10
I watched Ponyo in the cinema yesterday. I loved it! <3 It may not be my favourite Miyazaki but I still think it was very good. I loved the soft colouring, the pure love between Sosuke and Ponyo (love between kids is always cute), and the music. It was simply gorgeous and adorable.

Funny People 6/10
There was a good balance of drama with humor but it just lasted way too long. I went to a late showing and I was fighting to stay awake. I think it would've been a much better movie had it been even thrity minutes shorter. Also I didn't enjoy the ending all that much.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - I only wanted to see it because Kevin Durand is in it playing the blob but ended up really liking it, really loved Wade Wilson/Deadpool, really amazing. Never really been big on Wolverine, I think he is to over used but I did find him likeable in this one, over all I give it a 9/10.

The Final Destination 1/10
What a waste of money. Thank God I didn't spend the extra three-fifty for 3D digital. While the other movies in this saga managed to frighten me, exercising an exciting element of suspense, this move utterly flopped in its ability to hold the audience. While predictably unbelievable, the plot failed to engage the viewer at all. I am notoriously bad at handling scary movies but figured, as I'd seen the other three, that I might be able to handle this one as well. The fact that I never jumped in my seat, screamed, or fell out of my chair speaks of their full failure. That, and the added graphics of skeletons being impaled, crushed, and otherwise destroyed seems to have a cloying "We're so badass!!" vibe that left me condescendingly amused. Why add cheesy videos to the opening and ending credits that do nothing besides detract from an already crappy film?

Sita Sings the Blues...a wonderful piece of wacky independent animation based on the Hindu story, The Ramayana, told in a variety of animation styles with songs and a narrative by a trio of quite hilarious shadow puppets. But you can make up your own mind...the creator, Nina Paley, has made it available free for the masses here.

Mirrors 8/10
not the best horror movie ever but it has some solid backstory to it...and the demonic possession was pretty wicked...but it could have had more *gasp* moments in it...
