wow, what an interesting [and heated] topic.
personally, I think it should stay in. There's no aethiest in a foxhole, and I think, deep down, everyone recognizes that.
seriously, how on earth could a person believe they descendent from apes? I mean, gd, that's the biggest piece of scientific garbage I've ever heard, only topped by an article not too long ago about how some of the earliest neanderthols (sp?) might have had red hair.
but anyway, when I was a kid, we used to say the pledge out loud every morning with our right hand raised. pretty patriotic.
I don't really care for it much now though. I don't think people ever gave a second's thought to it, until some guy decided to make a grab for attention and make a big deal out of it, so now people are going 'oh, hey, yeah, that actually IS offensive to me' when they never noticed it before.
then again, that's how these things usually go.
oh, and to completely shatter everyone's illusion about the "Founding Fathers" because it really annoys me when people view them as upstanding individuals when they really weren't -- here are some fun facts:
George Washington had over 100 illigitemate children.
Benjamin Franklin had over 400 illigitemate children.
so really, this whole country is pretty much based on hypocrisy. Some people only say the 'gd' part just to soothe their conscience and keep them 'covered', very few really mean it.
but again, I'm all for keeping it.

Human's are not descended from apes. Apes and humans have a common ancestors. Apes are not our grandparents but our cousins. I think the Athiest's in Foxholes will refute that statement. www.atheistfoxholes.org/And here's a google link to a bunch of stories, and other sites featuring athiests in the military. www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=athiests+in+the+armed+forces George's numbers seem about right, but Benjamin Franklin, 400 children? That number is a little low. I mean the man made it a habbit of visiting a brothel almost every night in his youth. The founding father's wanted a government that stayed out of people's private lives, and they practiced what they preached. That doesn't scream hypocracy to me, I only wished more polititions took this outlook.

oh, sorry psylum, we posted at the same time, so I didn't see yours ^^; Human's are not descended from apes. Apes and humans have a common ancestors. Apes are not our grandparents but our cousins. And that is all GARBAGE. Complete and utter GARBAGE. Animals and humans are two completely DIFFERENT species. We don't share cousins, relatives, NOTHING with animals. mmmhmm, right. I still stand by my claim. It's very easy for people to say different things once they happen, and it's very easy to lie to oneself. I hope you'll never come to a situation where you're in a "foxhole", but when it comes down to the wire, and a person is by themself, walking a line with death, I doubt they'll still stand tall and proud as an atheist. George's numbers seem about right, but Benjamin Franklin, 400 children? That number is a little low. I mean the man made it a habbit of visiting a brothel almost every night in his youth. The founding father's wanted a government that stayed out of people's private lives, and they practiced what they preached. That doesn't scream hypocracy to me, I only wished more polititions took this outlook. [/quote] well, I said over 400 the founding fathers wanted a country based on morals, yet they themselves had no limits. That's exactly hypocrisy.

Humans are biologically similar to pigs that many pig organs, tissues, and arteries are being transplanted into humans and saving lives. Horse insulin was used to treat diabetes patients for decades before genetic engineering found a way to produce synthetic human insulin. Humans are very similar to other animals, these are just two examples that I remember right off hand. Well considering they're doing the very same thing you say no human being can do, I say you're wrong. They're under fire and serving the country, and they don't think God or anything supernatural is real. Well considering the things that made the Bill of Rights., I'd have to disagree and say they were going for personal freedom, and they were in fact practicing what they preeched, or at the very least, preeching what they practiced.

Again, just a friendly reminder folks, lets stay on topic. And let's be respectful of differing beliefs--calling someone's belief garbage is not mature debating. Also, if you're going to use numbers/statistics, use sources to back them up. Don't just throw out figures.

Alright, let's try this one more time.
The topic is, the "under God" portion of the Pledge of Allegiance and whether it should remain. Not evolution, not how many babies George Washington had, not your grandma's dog. Mkay?
Also, let's be respectful and have well-thought-out, mature debate please. In order to do that, we gotta cut the biting sarcasm as that's when people get offended and whatnot. If we can't play by the rules, this thread's goin in the trash.

I'm in the "Why is this a serious debate?" camp. I couldn't care less whether or not it's in the Pledge. To me, it's a symbol of a past time.
Set the Wayback Machine to 1954. It's the height of the Cold War. We've got one of our greatest generals in the top office, Dwight Eisenhower. In a sweep of patriotic and anti-Soviet fervor, "under God" was added when President Eisenhower signed it into law. Although it was inspired by a sermon inspired by the Gettysburg Address, it served as yet another distancing factor between the US (and the West) and the Soviet Union.

"Under God" should not be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance. This nation was built to have freedom of religion. Yes. I know that. But it was also built as a Christian country, UNDER GOD.
If you have a problem with the Christian God, speak of whoever you believe is god when you say it.
If you don't believe there is a god, just. don't. say. it. If you are reciting it with a group of people, just pause there, if you must.
I don't get why this is such a huge issue right now -_-

so now we are against freedom of speech. yeah lets all shut up and be quiet as Christianity slowly takes over this nation. as a non-christian i am deeply against calling this nation christian and it is not nor will ever be christian. if hat day comes i'm moving to canada before you burn us all for not believing in some carpenter named jesus.
