Because of differences in their interpretation of their religion. People are so stupid. I agree. Likely, we disagree on which people, however. ;D

Yeah, I'm sure that arrogance and imperialism never played a part in other countries hating us. And I just as sure that every person who disagrees with you is arrogant and imperialist.

What kind of an argument is that? Are you just going to ignore the imperialism that America did in order to become as powerful as it is now? Are you saying that American imperialism played no part in other countries despising us? Don't tell me you actually buy into the whole "they hate us because of our freedom" crap.

The election results were not a response to Iraq, Joe Lieberman, the big democrat pro-war guy won, against Ned Lamont, and his big argument was: Leave Iraq. Leave Iraq. Leave Iraq x126,348,239,200. With the unpopularity comment: people hated the civil war. They hated Lincoln, there were loads of Democrats (weird) that wanted us to just let the South go on its own. Lincoln didn't give a dang about the people's ideas and we think he's our greatest president now. The Kurds are doing fine in North Iraq (+) ;D, and almost 70% of Iraq is under Iraqi control(+) ;D, unfortunately the 30% is the cities(-). With the whole Fox biased so it doesn't count, you got your info from ABC, LIBERAL station. The problem with the timetable is that the insurgents will go "okay, we need to survive for x amount of time and the Americans will leave. Then we can put our full kill the others plan into action." If we leave Iraq will fall apart, if you think it's bad now wait until the biggest army in the world is gone. I'll put it this way, say you're a kid, let's say you really hate some other kid and the fight is about to start, however there are 12 big strong people next to you two that would cause a full fight to be a disaster. Would you fight then, or when the people leave? The kids are the Sunnis and Shiites, and the 12 big people is the U.S. army. I agree with you jazzie, to the extent of, we can't handle total war. If this was a different war, we'd just bomb the crap out of Iraq and kill as many insurgents as we could, taking dead civilians in stride.

It's the kind of argument that says "I don't care if other countries despise us, because we could nuke them into oblivion in the time it would take them to lay out their grievances against us." Now that the sarcasm is over with, I will assure you that I don't ignore those things. But I don't really care. We don't hold grudges for over 60 years. If they can't get over things that old, then that's not my problem.

Historyman, the Sunnis and Shiites are still bombing the crap out of each other, and last time I checked the "twelve big strong guys" were still there. Apparently, the insurgents are not as intimidated as you believe.

Demon, I didn't say they weren't. i meant that if we left, the bombing the crap out of each other would get worse, much worse.

Yep leaving would be a disaster. Complete civil war, mass chaos and a huge boost of Iran/Syria influence/power in the region.

And what happens if we do stay there? Will everything become all pretty with rainbows and roses? We've been there for years, and we haven't accomplished much. Just now Bush is starting to say, "Well, perhaps it's time for a different approach." How long will it be before we actually agree on the different approach? And how long will it be before that approach comes into effect, and starts making a difference? The important question is: Will it really make a difference if we stay for five more days or five more years? Because generals are saying that 2011 is a possible withdrawal date. That would be an eight year long war, with no certainty of accomplishing anything.

We really need to build relations with Iran so they can help extinguish the problem. Leaving will accomplish nothing for a fact. Staying might allow them enough time to build enough infrastructure to support there own protection of the citizens or it might not change anything. At least there is a chance of helping them in that time and even with no grantee of success we owe the Iraq citizens a chance. Leaving now seals there fate and they deserve more than that. By the way I am back.
