Most of my theories stem from how I would write it myself, so here goes.
I envision the final battle being much like this. Sokka is with the armies of the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes, probably with his dad, working as a warrior and tactition. His job is to keep the armies of the Fire Nation distracted while the others rush into the palace.
Toph, Katara and Aang (and possibly Zuko) rush into the Fire Palace much like they did in the Earth King. At the top of the main stairs, we find the bulk of the Royal Guards, possibly even the Dai Lee. Toph stays behind, saying she'll hold them off, and tells Aang and Katara (and possibly Zuko) to go on inside.
(around here, if Zuko is indeed with them, I figure Azula shows up. Zuko stays behind to hold her off and we get the much expected Agni Kai between the two of them)
Aang and Katara fight their way up into the palace. Here they encounter Ozai's personal guards. Some real badass firebenders, right? Each individual is about as good as season 1 Zuko and there's like 6 of them.
A crazy fight ensues, but time is running out. Any moment now, Ozai will be able to summon the power of Sozin's Comet. Katara tells Aang he has to go on. It has to be him, and time is short. She tells him to go, to leave her. He is reluctant, but deep down, he knows he has too. He leaves her in danger; he lets her go. It's like tearing out a part of is soul, but it has to be done.
Alone, Aang goes up to where Ozai is.
At first, it's a tough enough fight. Using all four elements, Aang is barely able to hold his own against the Fire Lord.
And then the time comes, and Ozai connects with Sozin's Comet. Desperately, Aang reaches out, and finds the Avatar State waiting for him.
They fight. And it's awe inspiring. The biggest fight we've seen. But even with the Avatar State, Aang is not strong enough to face the power of the comet.
(All this time, we've been cutting and editing between all of the other characters as they fight their own battles. Katara has been in a desperate struggle for her life, Zuko manages to defeat Azula. I have a mini theory that she tries to direct his lightning, but it goes through her brain and fries her mind, leaving her a harmless tomato the rest of her life. This is where either Katara pulls some crazy moves and manages to win on her own, or Zuko shows up and helps her. Either way, the two of them rush up to the top of the tower together, as they are the two biggest influences on Aang.)
They reach the top, and find Aang getting the bajeebus beat out of him. Without the Avatar State, he would have been long dead, but even with it it's not enough.
Ozai, seeing his son, offers Zuko the chance to join him (probably not sincerily). We have a CoD flashback. For an instant, we don't know what he'll do. And then he rejects Ozai to his face; tells him no.
Enraged, Ozai throws a fireball the size of a house at Zuko and Katara. Zuko steps in front of it, throws out his hands and...stops it. His bending has also been enhanced by the comet.
Aang knows what he has to do. Perhaps he is advised by a spirit, perhaps it's his own idea, but deep down he knows that the comet has to be destroyed. Otherwise, it could be used again in another 100 years. He shouts to Zuko and Katara that he has to do this.
Zuko tells him to go. He'll keep his father destracted. Aang connects with the spirit world, and vanishes.
Zuko and Ozai fight with emmense firebending, all the while the armies of the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes are being pushed further and further back by the enpowered firebenders. All hope looks lost, and then...
BOOM
A great flash in the sky, and the comet is destroyed. Ozai, who enstated the connection, is roasted alive by the backlash, thus preventing both Aang and Zuko from being murderers.
Zuko and Katara flee down the tower, which is likely collapsing, with Zuko probably dragging a weeping Katara who doesn't want to leave Aang. For a time, they think he's dead.
But then they find him, and for the third time we have a scene of him waking up in Katara's arms.
All of my shipping preferences basically stem from my desire to see this kind of ending ;p
I could stomach Aang learning an alternate method to mastering the Avatar State more than I could if they just tossed out the concept alltogether without a backwards glance. That would really tick me off.
Aang's job, as the Avatar, is to maintain balance.
If the Avatar State is dead, then the Avatar Cycle ends (Mike and Bryan said in their interview Aang didn't die...so it's not gone).
Which means Aang unintentionally destroyed the Avatar. Nothing he could do after that would forgive this mistake. The world itself probably wouldn't survive very long after that.
