I don't know why many of you guys think that aang is immature. For a 12 year old, and considering 12 year old boys I've met, aang is VERY mature for is age. Ad for toph, shes very immature for her age... seeing how normal girls and boys that age act, in real life and in the show. Katara obviously has shown much more love than toph ever has towards aang. I understand different relationships start out different, but I just don't see aang/toph as being helpful to either of them, much less toph. From what we've seen, toph isn't going to become any gentler... at least not from aang. If anyone, that would be iroh... considering their talk. Possibly zuko, because its easy to see that toph connects to zuko. Toph and Aang don't like each other... their personalities dont mix. since im lazy, i'll say no more at this moment then that taang will never work, but kataang will and already has. Zutara might work... but that would be weird with kataang... but I have a weird theory about it. If I feel like it, I might turn that theory into a fanfic... but its for both zutara and kataang, so....yah. I love what you have said here, about how their personalities don't mix. I completely agree. I'm a firm believer in how even the most opposites have at least one thing in common (and even the most alike are opposites in some ways), but I have yet to discover it with Toph and Aang. Those two are so different in every way possible. They have the ability to use those differences in a way that is positive and life-changing for the both of them, but with the exception of Aang having to think like an earthbender for the sake of earthbending and maybe (MAYBE!) Toph trying to think like an airbender for the sake of teaching one (because it goes both ways), there is no way that is going to happen. They might tolerate each other and become great friends, because I think that they will, but actually their personalities mixing? Not a chance.

They might tolerate each other and become great friends, because I think that they will, but actually their personalities mixing? Not a chance. Yes. I agree completely. One hundred percent. All the way! In my opinion, Toph isn't the type to be in a relationship. She's much too independent. For example: in "The Chase", she refused to help anybody, stating that she could take care of herself. Well, that's not bad or anything, but you can't be like that in a relationship: that would be way too difficult, and way too crushing. As for Aang? He is far more mature than Toph. Our little earthbending friend continues to call him "Twinkle Toes", while Aang is just trying to focus on learning how to bend. I'm not trying to character bash, but I'm just saying that if Aang and Toph ever did have a relationship, it would be too hard, and too stern: their personalities don't mix, and they never could. Fire's put out by Water. Fire melts Water's solid state of Ice. Earth will always be strong and agressive. Air will always be evasive and quick. It might be cool watching two benders of contradicting elements battle, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a relationship between them will be nice.

If I feel like it, I might turn that theory into a fanfic... but its for both zutara and kataang, so....yah. I don't see Toph as being immature so much as insecure. She's lived a very different life from all the other characters, so it's very hard for her to accept help and kindness (Zuko's like that too.) She can't just write off twelve years of keeping to herself in a matter of weeks, but that doesn't mean that she can't change in time. In fact, it would be unnatural for her to stay the same after all she's experienced now. She's a little more open and friendly, but she isn't Katara either. She doesn't believe in taking a gentle approach to obstacles; in her experience, she's probably found that facing things head on accomplishes the most. When teaching others, people usually use the techniques that others used to teach them. Gran Gran was probably Katara's first teacher, so she learned a patient, kind approach for her pupils. Toph probably got most of her real earthbending education from observing the strong, hard people around her a mixing in her own methods. She learned best with strength and self discipline, so she applied the same to Aang. Neither method is better, they are just different. I do think Aang and Toph care about each other, even if they are a little indirect about it. Toph seemed pleased when Aang succeeded at learned earth bending, and Aang was nearly in tears after chasing Toph off in The Chase. It may not be romance now, but I can see them growing into it (though sadly, probably not in the canon universe....which isn't about to stop me from shipping them.) They are very different people, but not so different that they could never be together. Toph will need to learn to open up and Aang with need to toughen up a bit, but in the end I think they could meet in the middle. *hearts for Taang*

Actually, I think he was more stressed over losing his teacher. I just don't get a vibe that's heading to romance. Maybe friendship, even a close friendship. But not romance. I could even picture Toph not getting involved with anyone. Not giving up her independence to anyone. I could totally see her opening a school for earthbenders as she gets older, a true master teaching instead of that guy she was learning from, and focusing on that instead of having romance, marriage, and a family.
And Gran Gran was not Katara's teacher. Katara herself stated she was the only waterbender in the south pole and that she taught herself a few moves.

Inscure, too. She just acts very childish and bratty. You can see that from nearly everything she does. I'd expect a 5 year old to be like that, not a 12 year old. It would be better if she kept to herself a least a little more... had a secret of some kind? And yeah, aang was definatley upset because he drove away his earthbending teacher, he even said that. But he did yell at her, never once yelled at katara. The one time he firebended and hurt her, he then refused to firebend ever again (im sure that this will come back to him with guilt when he starts to learn firebending again). Toph will not open up, and if from anyone- not aang. Iroh, for example, helped her a bit. She even seems now on very friendly terms with katara. These things weren't leanred from aang... infact, just iroh pretty much. You may think they learn from each other, but the only one who is learning is aang, because well... he needs to learn earthbending. And well... toph was happy after he suceeded cause... generally when you tutor someone, and see them do well, you don't get bummed. Even though... it was katara's talk with aang that REALLY made him suceed. I don't really like aang toughening up. I understand in certain aspects of bravery, but as said I like the sweet, playful aang we all know and like. But they just have no chemistry... toph was meant to be independent. Katara on the otherhand is perfect for aang. She comforts him and cares for him. They fight together and for each other. They learn from each other, and none of them have a strong need for independence. They work with each other and their personalities mix perfectly. Their relationship is beautiful and carring, the pairing of taang is rough inside and out.

Ok, I'm not bashing Katang or anything but I just want to say that I don't think Katara and Aang are perfect for each other. I think, I'll say in ways because I'm Zutarian, that they are right for each other. I don't agree with the use of perfect that's all. Mainly because I associate "perfect" with "flawless" and "problemless" <<<(don't think that's a word but you know what I mean) I highly doubt that they wouldn't get into any arguments about anything, I haven't heard of a couple that hasn't gotten into some sort of a quarrel with their significant other.
And to appease my fellow Zutarians, I do think, in ways ;D, that Zuko and Katara are right for each other.

Toph was pleased when Aang succeeded at earthbending, because she was his teacher; she had the responsibility of showing the Avatar how to move rock and etc., and finally, after countless tries, he was able to do it. Anybody would be beaming with pride and happiness. As for Aang in tears, he was just upset that he drove off his teacher; he wasn't really bawling over the fact that she left, just over the fact that his teacher left. As for a relationship growing, I don't think it will happen. By the time Katara and Aang had known each other for just a week or two, they were already quick friends, with a strong, beautiful bond that was impossible to break. They look out for each other, and listen when the other feels crushed. I don't see Taang with that. I see Taang with maybe a few flirting or blushing moments.

I see one or two Taang moments happening. Like about the same as the Zutara moments. Enough to keep the fans happy. Something along the lines of Toph trying to teach him something and leaning in too close. If Katara saw, she'd be mad. Very mad.

I agree with you- she does handle her insecurity in the wrong way. There is a big difference between being insecure and working through it with a positive attitude and being insecure and trying to cover it up by negativity. I know that she spent the majority of her life with secrets and trying to cover it up, and that is a big part of her, but when she joined the Gaang, she should've seen that as an opportunity to change. Not a big change and completely transform her personality (because nobody would want that), but take into consideration what kind of people she's surrounded by and maybe take some lessons from them. She comes off as refusing to do that and as a result, I don't think she and Aang could ever be in a romantic relationship. Aang is changing constantly and right now, Toph would hold him back.

I agree that Toph isn't handling her issues as well as she could, but I do think that it will take a bit more time for her to accept others. She's only been around for, what, three episodes? I don't think it's unreasonable for her to take a bit more time to adjust. And she is learning to listen to the others. She took Katara's advice when teaching Aang, which was porbably a big step for her, considering how reluctant she was to accept help before. Yes, if Toph didn't change at all, she would hold Aang back, but with time she could definatly have a postive role in his life.

Agreed. I don't doubt that she needs more time to adjust, but it's still frustrating to see how little she seems to progress through these eps.
