Of course Zuko serves a purpose in the show. But he doesn't know that. Avatar's never dabbled into meta-fiction. Well, here's the creators' take on it. And yiceman, fair or not...your post is effing hilarious. Karma.

The creators have their plan for him. Fine. People like that. People like Zuko. Who knows what'll happen in season 3. Maybe season 3 will make him less repugnant to me.
And people wonder why the fandom has helped further my dislike of Zuko. Dislike him and you might as well have the plague.

I have no problem with people who dislike Zuko...but describing him with words like 'repugnant' is like waving a red flag to a bull to some Zuko fans, and is certainly, in my mind, disrespectful to us. I don't much care for Aang or Katara but I don't go around belittling them either because I know there are many people who adore them...to paraphrase Forrest Gump...life is like a box of chocolates, every one is someone's favourite...

Nan, don't take this as being directed towards you, just general observations and a bit of upset over someone actually taking the energy today to e-mail my personal e=mail address about how my fan work sucks because I don't draw Zuko fan art and I should stop drawing sucky Kataang pictures.
But how is what I said any different than what other people say about my favorite characters? People aren't taking my feelings into consideration when saying they want to set Aang on fire, or kill him, or that he's an annoying little brat (and I'm paraphrasing things I've seen in the year+ I've been active in this fandom). So excuse me while I feel a little bothered by the double standard.
I'm usually very good natured about other people's opinions, especially towards Aang because they can have them. I might debate it a bit forcefully, but I'm not rude about it.
And what about the comments about Mai? Good grief. People don't mince words about her. Again, double standard.
But I find Zuko uninteresting and many times his behavior and treatment of others is distasteful especially since he's touted as being mature by a lot of the fandom.
I willing to see what happens in season 3 with Zuko. maybe the interaction with Mai will make him more interesting to me. Maybe a turn of events. Who knows.

I know...it's hard...when people say nasty things about our favourites we feel obliged to retaliate because we take them personally.
That's why I try very hard not to say something that can be taken to heart, I respect the other fans and their feelings...but I know I'm a minority in that.

You are and you are adorable for it. I wish the fandom had more of you. But even we fairly even-minded people snap on occasion.
Like I said, bad experience this morning sort of brought my frustration to a head.
I love Aang because in many ways he reminds me of my godson. A kid who is 11 years old and has been through more crap than a lot of kids his age and probably more adults too. But he is stong and funny and smiles. That kid is my hero. Life dumped on him and he just goes on and it hasn't changed who he is fundementally.
And I see a lot of those qualities in Aang. Which is probably why he's far more special to me as a character than the others (although, I'd love to spend an afternoon with Iroh and Sokka drinking tea, eating meat and noodles, and singing songs and making up poetry. And Zuko can teach me swords. I've always wanted to learn how to do that cause I will admit that's pretty cool...LOL).
While I dislike Zuko, I find certain aspects of him kind of endearing like his awkwardness around girls. I think that's kind of cute in a way. I found the whole awkward date with Jin amusing. I couldn't understand how others hated it. Zuko's dweebiness (for lack of a better word) is charming and why people want to turn him into a passion filled sex god is beyond me. It totally takes away of from one of the more endearing aspects of him.

I agree with Amira about the double standard thing. Say one negative thing about Zuko or Iroh and it's the end of world. But i's ok for people to call Azula b**ches and ok to call Mai and Ty Lee degrading as well.

I guess this proves that in many ways Zuko has stolen the fandom ;D
I watch very little TV and have - until Avatar came along - avoided being involved in fandoms. I rarely become devoted to anything media related, but Avatar really grabbed my attention and certain characters did as well. So I've become attached.
I've for the most part experienced many positives from this fandom. So I suppose I'm lucky (I've heard horror stories about other fandoms).

Amira, I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you today. No one has the right to do that to you. Your art and stories are how you express your love for a show that we all adore, and discouraging that just because you don't happen to cover a certain person's favorite subject is just all kinds of wrong. In short, it sucks. And sadly, the fandom does have a tendency to turn people off certain characters, and that also disappoints me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm a rabid Zuko fangirl , but some people just take it way too far. I don't project on Zuko that he's a sex god or a shining example of maturity. I just appreciate his character for what it is - a teenage boy who acts surprisingly like a teenage boy - unsure, moody, awkward around girls, conflicted. I like Zuko for his struggle. Now did I want to smack him in the head for what he did in CoD? Oh yeah! But I understood it because he had all the right buttons pushed, and I have a feeling that all his life he's been told he's inferior, and the chance to finally prove his "worth" to his family was too much to resist. I like Zuko because I see some of myself in him. Someone who's been doubted, told they were "not good enough" somehow, and who struggles to make that statement untrue. The only problem is he doesn't know how to do that yet, though I hope that in Season 3 he lets the sweet boy we saw in "Zuko Alone" shine through.

I agree that Zuko has stolen the show. His story is much more complex than any other character. He is constantly in conflict with his own morals and the Fire Nation's code of conduct for its members. It is not just your simplistic "chosen one" story where the protagonist just doesn't want to have the responsibility of the task he's been appointed to do. This story has been done to death. I am actually waiting to see a story in which the "chosen one" actually wants to be the "chosen one".

I didn't...I was just hoping that you might be comforted to know that not all Zuko fangirls are like that...I hate that there are people out there like that and I'm rather embarassed to be associated with them. And I also have had my moments of being a little snappier or moodier due to outside influences. But I think someone saying your art sucks because you don't draw Zuko is really low and totally uncalled for. Draw what you want to draw...creativity is a wonderful thing

Oh I know and I thank you for it. Today was not a good day to say stuff about my work because I'm competing for a grad school scholarship and my ranking in my program of study and I'm nervous about the quality of any work I do at the moment. But to have someone insult my work for such a trivial reason was kind of bothersome because I enjoy drawing fan art. It's kind of a release for me from client work or school work. Ah stress. I thought I gave that up when I graduated from my undergrad program...LOL. I liked Luthien's post because it was mostly of a description of why she enjoys Zuko's character (and how she enjoys it for what she feels it is) rather than taking the opportunity to say how unappealing other characters are. I can see why someone might enjoy his character for those reasons and looking at it in that fashion I can see how Zuko could grow on a fan. But I'm gonna have to wait until season 3. Zuko might grow on me, we'll see. And if he does, I will be the first to admit it. But Aang will always have a special place on my favorites list.

they did what, amira ? how could someone say YOUR work sucks? i love it^_^. good luck w/ your scholarship thing. and i agree with luthien too. and i too would like to see the "sweet boy from Zuko Alone" more often too. then again we may just be weird like that. i like the story as a whole though, so i don't put one character before the rest as far as stories are concerned. whether i like the characters the same is a different story. momo wins that one hands down. those ears of his are so adorable...and the tail is so cute . reminds me of my sweet little kitty........that every one else calls a demon .
